The 2006 Danvers Chemical fire occurred at about 2:46 AM EST on Wednesday, November 22, 2006. An explosion occurred at the solvent plant and ink manufacturer CAI Inc., located in Danversport Danvers, Massachusetts, which distributed with paint manufacturer Arnel. The explosion was captured by security cameras and was reportedly heard up to 50 miles away in southern Maine and New Hampshire. Arnel stopped the operation after the explosion.

The 13 May 2008 report from the US Agency for Chemical Safety and Chemical Hazard Analysis linked the explosion with unintentionally overnight heating on an infiltrated tank containing flammable solvents.

Damage
The blast damaged more than 90 homes, blew windows and knocked down several houses from their foundations. Officials believe that some more severe houses should be flattened and rebuilt. Some of the damaged buildings include bakeries, boats in the nearest marina, and the New England House for the Deaf, auxiliary living facilities for the deaf or deafblind and elderly in need of constant care. "These people are very fragile," said state representative Ted Speliotis, D-Danvers, whose district covers the affected area. "Many of them suffer from Alzheimer's and other illnesses It's obvious they can not stay here long, but obviously they will not be able to return for some time."
Fire Chief James P. Tutko toured the area by helicopter and said many residents would be guarded from their homes for the foreseeable future. "It looks like a war zone, that's the only thing I can say," Tutko said. Fortunately, no one was killed. "Someone out there likes us," Tutko commented. Finally, he says that determining the cause of the explosion will take days.
The governor quit Mitt Romney around the area and said the explosion was a "Thanksgiving miracle", because the explosion "was equivalent to a 2,000 lb bomb exploding in a residential neighborhood," and no one was killed. In an area of ââmore than 300 residents, only 10 reported minor injuries. Residents in the area were evacuated to Danvers High School, where a temporary shelter was set up by the American Red Cross in Massachusetts Bay. Donations are taken for residents affected by the explosion. Residents are also advised to immediately start filing insurance claims and monitoring their expenses.
Environmental impact
There is little environmental concern because of the water runoff of the chemicals. According to the coordinator at the scene of the Environmental Protection Agency, Mike Nalipinski, the initial test showed a low toluene level, a solvent, but said it was insignificant. Water runoff from the water used by firefighters leaves a purple glow in the river and tests are performed. However, water is not a local drinking water supply, and chemicals evaporate quickly. Chief Tutko says there is no risk of toxic smoke entering the air.
An East Propane facility is located near the area, however, it is not the source of the explosion. A company spokeswoman said that although the property suffered some minor damage, their tanks were safe.
According to WHDH television, someone who answered the phone at CAI Georgetown, Massachusetts headquarters declined to comment, and phone messages left at the president's home were not returned.
