The American Dental Education Association , founded in 1923 as the American Association of Dental Schools, is a nonprofit association representing academic dentistry and is based in Washington, DC. known as The Voice of Dental Education.
In 2006, the ADEA instituted open membership, which increased the number of ADEA member institutions and involved faculty, staff, students, residents and associates in employment and association objectives. The mission of ADEA is to lead institutions and individuals within the dental education community to address contemporary issues affecting education, research and delivery of oral health care for the health and safety of society as a whole.
The institutional members of ADEA include all 76 dental schools in the US and Canada, more than 800 combined and advanced dental education programs and 66 companies working in oral health education. Individual members of the ADEA are numbered at more than 20,000 faculty, staff, deans, program directors and students.
Dental education is a wide and diverse field that trains people as general dentists, specialists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and dental laboratory technicians. Membership ADEA reflect this diversity, so the association has 38 sections: academic affairs, anatomy, behavioral science, biochemistry, nutrition, and microbiology, business administration and finance, kariologi, the administration of clinics, community dentistry prevention, comprehensive care and general dentistry , continuing education, dental and occult anatomy, dental education, dental health education, dental informatics, dental admissions officers, development, alumni affairs, and public relations, education research/development and curriculum, endodontics, gay-straight alliances, gerontology and geriatric education, graduate and postgraduate education, the affairs of minorities, dentistry operative and biomaterials, biological oral, diagnosis of oral/oral medications, radiology oral and maxillofacial, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, physiology, pharmacology, and therapeutics, general dentistry post doctoral, practice management, prosthodontics, s polite affairs and financial aid, and substance abuse, addiction and education of tobacco dependency; and ten special interest groups: career development for new educators, dental clinic coordinators, foreign dental specialists, dental health education programs graduates, dental implants, dental lasers, professionals, ethics, and legal issues in dentistry, teaching scholarships and learning, and teaching and learning with emerging technologies.
ADEA also fosters an interconnected community experience that allows members to meet their individual goals while leveraging their collective strengths:
- ADEA provides invaluable support to include students through the Education Line Division, which supports four application services: ADEA AADSAS (predoctoral program), ADEA PASS (postdoctoral program), ADEA CAAPID (postdoctoral program for international dentists) and ADEA DHCAS (dental hygiene program).
- The ADEA encourages students from diverse backgrounds to learn about careers in dentistry as early as elementary school. Programs such as ExploreHealthCareers.org, Dental Health and Summer Education Program, and W.K. The Kellogg/ADEA Minority Dental Faculty Development Program all helps underrepresented minority students in realizing their career goals.
- For dental educators, ADEA offers sustainable opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge. The ADEA Leadership Institute and Leadership Development Program Allied Dental Faculty ADEA develops leadership skills. Webinars, fellowship programs, and meetings (including the ADEA Annual Session & Annual Exhibition) offer educational programs and networks to educators at all stages of a career.
- The ADEA publishes peer-reviewed Dental Education Journals, Dental Education Bulletin , ADEA Official Guidelines for Dental Schools , surveys and reports on dental education, summary policies, and more.
ADEA determines best practices for dental education and encourages changes in dental programs and institutions that will benefit everyone. The ADEA Commission for Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI) has involved representatives of every US dental school in particular to examine the dental curriculum.
ADEA contributes to solving oral health care problems by encouraging excellence in dental education, research and patient care, and providing financial support for dental education, research, and leadership through the ADEAGies Foundation. The Gies Foundation was founded in 1950, by colleagues and admirers or Dr. William J. Gies, a Columbia University biochemistry professor. Dr. Gies is best known for his report on dental education in 1926 in the United States and Canada. Gies publishes over 600 articles, pamphlets, and books. The Gies award for vision, innovation and achievement in oral and dental education is distributed annually at special celebrations held concurrently with the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition.
