src: i.ytimg.com

William Scott Goldberg (born December 27, 1966) is a professional American wrestler, actor, former professional soccer player, and former mixed martial arts commentator known for his time at WWE and World Championship Wrestling (WCW) at under the Goldberg ring name.

Considered one of the most popular professional wrestlers in the late 1990s, Goldberg was the top star and public face of the Wrestling World Championships (WCW) at the top of Monday Night War. Goldberg rose to prominence at WCW with an unbeaten streak victory in a single competition from 1997 to 1998, regarded as the longest win in professional wrestling until Asuka outlasted him in 2017. During this time, he became the double champion of the United States Heavyweight. and one-time World Class Weight Champion. He is also a World Team Tag Champion once (with Bret Hart), making him along with Hart the fifth winner of WCW Triple Crown.

Following the closure of WCW in 2001, Goldberg wrestled with the All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) between 2002 and 2003, and WWE between 2003 and 2004, becoming the World Class's last World Class Champion. After twelve years from the company, he returned to WWE in 2016 and directed the Survivor Series against Brock Lesnar and Fastlane against Kevin Owens, where he won the Universal Championship, his third world title. Goldberg became the headline of several pay-per-view events for WCW and WWE, including two closing major WCW Starcale annual events. He is the only person who won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, WWE's World Heavyweight Championship, and WWE Universal Championship. He was inducted into WWE Hall of Fame class 2018 WrestleMania weekend 34.

Before he became a professional wrestler, Goldberg was a professional footballer. After his first retirement from professional wrestling, he began work as a commentator for the promotion of mixed martial arts EliteXC until closing. She hosted 26 episodes of Garage Mahal on DIY Network from 2009 to 2011.

Early life

Goldberg was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he owns a bar mitzvah in Temple Israel and graduated from Tulsa Edison High School. He earned a love for soccer early in life and was a bouncer at the age of 16. Goldberg's mother, Ethel, was a classical violinist, while his father, Jed, who attended Harvard University, was an obstetrician and gynecologist. They divorced, and Jed died in late 2006. Ethel also gave birth to flowers and created an award-winning hybrid orchid, which he named after Goldberg. His brother, Michael, is the owner of a music club in Aspen, Colorado.

Goldberg is proud of the Jewish heritage and refuses to hide it in the wrestling world, including refusing to wrestle with Yom Kippur. His Romanian great-grandfather, Marcel, emigrated from Bucharest and came to the US via Ellis Island. Another great-grandfather, Willie, was a Russian immigrant.

Soccer career

Goldberg was awarded a scholarship to play on the Georgia Bulldogs University soccer team where he served as a defender. He was taken by the Los Angeles Rams in the 11th round, with a 302nd overall selection, in the 1990 NFL draft.

He played for the Los Angeles Rams in the 1990 NFL season, followed by tasks with CFL Sacramento Gold Miners and Atlanta Falcons from 1992 to 1994. After being cut from Falcons, in 1995 he was selected by the new expansion team, the Carolina Panthers, in the NFL expansion draft of the year 1995, but never played with the team. He is the first player to be cut by the Panthers.

NFL Goldberg's career ended when he "tore his lower abdomen from his pelvis". He has the hope of returning to the league after rehab but, due to his lack of success, is not considered a major asset. Goldberg describes playing in the NFL as a "mixed emotional experience" because, despite achieving the goal of playing only in the NFL, he does not get the level of achievement he wants.

Professional wrestling career

World Championship Wrestling

Initial training and match (1996-1997)

During rehabilitation after his NFL injury, Goldberg began powerlifting training and mixed martial arts training. He was discovered by Lex Luger and Sting who urged him to try professional wrestling. Although not a professional wrestling fan, he sees it as an alternative to his immature soccer career and begins training at the WCW Power Plant.

Working as Bill Gold, Goldberg made five appearances. The first was in a dark match at Monday Nitro on June 23, 1997 where he defeated Buddy Lee Parker. He also faces and defeats Buddy Landell (Dark Saturday Night dark game), Hugh Morrus (home show), Chip Minton ( Nitro dark game) and John Betcha (home show). His most recent pre-TV appearance was in a dark game on July 24th on a Saturday Night Night that recorded a loss to Chad Fortune.

Consecutive streak (1997-1998)

On the episode of September 22, 1997 Nitro , Goldberg defeated Hugh Morrus in his debut game. Soon after that, he began scoring quick wins over fellow WCW wrestlers in a span of 1-2 minutes. Goldberg's victory won him quickly to raise the card, and he was encouraged as a single wrestler. The newcomer captivates fans with his monumental yet silent charisma, brute strength, and dexterity that lead him to leap over the rope, kicking high and even occasional backflips. Goldberg made a pay-per-view debut on Starcale by beating Steve McMichael. In early 1998, Goldberg pressed Brad Armstrong on SuperBrawl VIII and pinned Perry Saturn on Spring Stampede. In mid-March, WCW stopped referring to him by his full name, shortening it to only Goldberg. Around this time, WCW began to calculate Goldberg's streak win on television as he continued up the rankings. Goldberg's victory over Saturn was his 74th consecutive loss, and the following night at Nitro he challenged Raven to the United States Heavyweight Championship that Raven had won the previous night at Spring Stampede. Despite the annoyance of Raven's Flock, Goldberg defeated them all and defeated Raven to win his first professional wrestling championship. Two days later on April 22nd episode Thunder , he made his first successful title defense against Mike Enos. Goldberg then started a feud with Raven and The Flock. At Slamboree, he ended his feud with The Flock after a successful title defense against Saturn. Goldberg continued to make a successful title defense against Konnan at The Great American Bash and Curt Hennig. By this time, he had adopted his slogan "Who's next?" referring to his rapidly growing winning streak.

As Goldberg increasingly became the main repeater, he continued to defend the US heavyweight championship and gradually became a contender for the WCW heavyweight World Championship hosted by New World Order (nWo) Hollywood leader Hogan. Hogan eventually promised Goldberg the title match. The match was scheduled for July 6, 1998 from the Nitro event held at Georgia Dome in Atlanta with more than 40,000 people attending, but Hogan insisted that Goldberg must first defeat Scott Hall's nWo stablemate. Goldberg won and then in the evenings was also able to beat Hogan to become WCW World Heavyweight Champion, in turn emptied the United States Heavyweight Championship. At Road Wild, Goldberg won a royal battle, made up of nWo members. After Diamond Dallas Page became the number one competitor for the WCW World Wide Weight Championship, Goldberg and Page began to fight each other. In Halloween Havoc, hostilities were resolved after Goldberg beat Page to defend the title. According to Goldberg, his game against Page was his favorite game of his career. At Starcale, Goldberg's invincible streak ended at the official count of 173-0, and after 174 days as champion when he lost the title to Kevin Nash after Scott Hall, posing as a ringside security guard, made Goldberg run-in and shocked with a Taser pistol. But Goldberg took revenge on Souled Out, when he defeated Hall in a ladder tier game. Goldberg wins when he uses a Taser, which is hung high above the ring, needing a ladder to get it. At the same time, WWF began to mock Goldberg with the character of Gillberg, an immortal officer dressed in a manner similar to Goldberg and mocking his signature and his signature behavior, but small and thin, using his slogan "Who is the First?" Because he never won.

Goldberg's win-loss record at the 1997-1998 WCW event was different from that of the company, with official figures exaggerating the number of matches in which he won to 173. Nick Schwartz of Fox Sports wrote: "Nobody really knows what records Goldberg's actual is... but generally accepted that 173-0 is an increasing number ". Some of Goldberg's industry associates have stated that the figure is exaggerated. His colleague at WCW at the time, Chris Jericho stated: "One week he will be 42-0 and seven days later he will be 58-0.Is stepping on the number of insects?" Manager Jimmy Hart, who also works with Goldberg at WCW, considers the level of decoration as "rather funny", while the professional wrestler The Miz says: "The numbers will go on and on and on, like 'Wait a minute. this victory in a short time '? "This greatness undermined the credibility of the WCW audience: after realizing that the figure had been forged, fans started pulling out the homemade signs that beat Goldberg's record.

Championship chase and final hostilities (1999-2001)

At Spring Stampede, Goldberg got his revenge on Nash by defeating him. Then in Slamboree the following month, Goldberg was "wounded" in an attack by Rick and Scott Steiner and took time off to prepare for his movie debut in the 1999 film Universal Soldier: The Return with star Timecop film Jean-Claude Van Damme. She returns two months later and defeats Rick Steiner in the Road Wild. Goldberg then restarted his feud with DDP as well as involving allied Page, The Jersey Triad, which culminated in a match in the Fall Brawl that Goldberg won. After Goldberg finished his rivalry with Page, he started focusing on Sid Vicious and challenged him for the match to end Sid's winning streak. The two are at odds with each other, culminating in a match at Halloween Havoc for the US heavyweight title Sid. Goldberg beat Sid through a referee termination, and thus won the second US heavyweight championship. That night, he answered the open challenge of WCW World Heavyweight Champion Sting and defeated him to win the championship. On the next night's episode Nitro , commissioner J.J. Dillon decided that the match had not been approved by WCW and that, therefore, Goldberg's victory was off. Sting, however, was not given the title back for his attack on the referee during the event and Dillon announced a 32-man tournament for the now-empty title which included Goldberg.

Goldberg against Bret Hart at the same time Nitro in the first round of the tournament in a match that also became the first defense of the US heavyweight championship he just won. Sid Vicious managed to interfere in the contest and Goldberg cost the match, thus giving him a second career loss, costing him a degree, and eliminating him from the tournament Hart eventually won at Mayhem in November. Goldberg continued his rivalry with Vicious and defeated him in "I Quit" match in Mayhem to end their hostilities. Soon, Goldberg joined Hart, working with him to defeat Creative Control for World Tag Team Championship WCW. One week later, they lost the title to The Outsiders (Scott Hall and Kevin Nash).

At Starrcade, Goldberg challenged Hart for the WCW World Wideweight Championship; in the course of the match, Goldberg sent a hard kick to Hart's head, legitimately giving him a concussion and tearing the muscles around his neck. Hart went on, suffering what he believed was at least one other concussion when he hit his head on the floor while executing a ring-four legpoin aided by ringpost. The match ended when Roddy Piper, the special guest referee for the contest, declared Hart the winner although Goldberg never gave it to the Sharpshooter. Hart emptied the title the following night at Nitro , saying he did not want to win like that, and gave Goldberg a rematch. Goldberg was defeated again due to outer interference from Hall and Nash, who came to the branded bat rings that they used to attack Goldberg. In a turn, Hart takes one of the bats from The Outsiders and starts to defeat Goldberg himself, doing enough damage to score the pin and reclaim his championship. After the game, Hall, Nash, Hart and Jeff Jarrett reformed the nWo and gave Goldberg a new target for hostilities which, however, will not last long.

Shortly after losing her title game, Goldberg injured herself on the 23 December 1999 episode of Thunder during a sequence in which she chased a nWo limo into the parking lot. A point in the sequence called Goldberg to pound the windshield of a limousine with his hand. To ensure his safety, Goldberg gets help from a piece of metal pipe and his hands are covered in a black ribbon. After this, Goldberg will break some windows of the vehicle. There were four windows on the side of the limousine and Goldberg broke the first two with his hands. He then becomes aggressive, putting his forearm through the third window and immediately hitting him. Goldberg completed the sequence by hitting the limousine bonnet with his bloody arm, but as soon as it was over, he was taken from the arena and rushed to the nearest hospital where the wound was patched. Goldberg lost a lot of blood because of the accident. The injury caused Goldberg to miss the January 4, 2000 New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) Tokyo Dome show, where he was scheduled to face Manabu Nakanishi. After taking a leave of absence to recuperate, Goldberg returned to WCW on May 29, 2000 episode Nitro interrupting a disability match between Kevin Nash and the Abbott Tank team and Rick Steiner. At The Great American Bash, Goldberg betrayed Nash during Nash's world championship game against Jeff Jarrett and turned into a villain for the first time in his career, aligning himself with the New Blood faction. It did not last long, because Goldberg was again defeated by injury and had to pass the time. As a result of this betrayal, Goldberg clashed with Nash and defeated him at Bash on the Beach, with help from fellow New Blood member Scott Steiner. Goldberg participated in a triumphant number one contest against Nash and Steiner in New Blood Rising, which Nash won. Goldberg came out of the game halfway while Nash told him to get ready for the Jackknife Powerbomb and swear to Vince Russo as he left the ring, turning to face again. He then started a rivalry with Steiner, culminating in a disqualification game in the Fall Brawl which Goldberg lost due to outside interference.

After losing it at Steiner, Goldberg's rivalry with Russo was accelerating and in October, after finally enough, Russo gave Goldberg an ultimatum. If Goldberg loses another match at any time, unless he manages to double his unstoppable power from 1997 to 1998, he will be forced to retire from professional wrestling. Goldberg beat KroniK (Brian Adams and Bryan Clark) in Halloween Havoc in a handicap elimination match. He then initiated feuds with Lex Luger. It culminated in a match at Mayhem, which won Goldberg. They continued their rivalry and fought in a rematch at Starrcade. Goldberg won the game, but after that he was attacked by Luger's partner, Buff Bagwell. Goldberg is at odds with Luger and Bagwell, who call themselves "Totally Buffed". The streak broke down at Sin when Goldberg, working with his Power Plant trainer DeWayne Bruce, lost to Totally Buffed in the team without a disqualified match after a "fan" praised him, allowing Totally Buffed to pin it. The storyline was intended to allow Goldberg to undergo shoulder surgery, but WCW was sold to WWF in March 2001, while Goldberg was still recovering. WWF did not buy Goldberg's contract with Time Warner (WCW's parent company) as they did with some other WCW employees, so he was not involved in the "Invasion" of WWF. Goldberg was kept under contract with Time Warner until May 2002, when he agreed to a contract purchase. He is the highest-paid WCW athlete, with Bret Hart, earning 2.5 million dollars a year, an amount that will increase to 3.5 million in the final year of his contract, due to expire in July 2003.

All Pro Japan Wrestling (2002-2003)

Goldberg suffered an arm injury during the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race at the Long Beach Grand Prix in April 2002. In August 2002, he returned to the ring in Japan. He initially joined the All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW), defeating Satoshi Kojima and Taiy? Kea. He went on to defeat Rick Steiner in a match for the W-1 campaign, and teamed up with Keiji Mutoh to defeat KroniK. His success in Japan led to WWF - now renamed World Wrestling Entertainment - to start contract negotiations with him. World Wrestling Entertainment (2003-2004)> World Wrestling Entertainment (2003-2004)

After leaving Japan, Goldberg signed a one-year contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in March 2003, debuting on March 31st episode of Raw (the night after WrestleMania XIX) and starting a feud with The Rock by spearheading him. Their rivalry intensified when The Rock deployed a segment titled The Rock Concert , where he mocked Goldberg along with Gillberg, but Goldberg defeated him in his debut game at Backlash on April 27, after three spears and a Jackhammer . Goldberg was unbeaten for the next half of the year, beating 3-Minute Warning in his first game at Raw . Goldberg defeated Christian the following week at Raw in a steel cage game.

Goldberg next clashed with Chris Jericho, when in Jericho's first edition of Highlight Reel, an interview where Goldberg was a guest, he complained that nobody wanted Goldberg at WWE and continued to insult him in the following week. On the May 12th episode of Raw , a mysterious attacker attempted to run Goldberg by limousine. The following week at Raw , Rock Cold Raw Co-manager Steve Austin interrogates several superstars to find out who is driving the car. One of the interrogations was Lance Storm, who admitted that he was the attacker. Austin forced the Storm to play Goldberg, who beat Storm, soon after that Goldberg forced the Storm to admit that Jericho was a superstar who conspired with Storm to crash into him. On May 26th episode of Raw Goldberg was once again a guest on Highlight Reel, where Jericho expressed jealousy over Goldberg's success at WCW and felt that since joining WWE, he had achieved all he wants in his career and all that's left is to defeat Goldberg and challenge him for the match. At Bad Blood on June 15, Goldberg beat Jericho.

Goldberg entered the competition with Triple H, challenging him for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam on 23 August in the second Elimination Chamber game at WWE. After removing Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels and Jericho, he was pinned by Triple H after Ric Flair threw a hammer into the room and Triple H hit Goldberg with it, which means Triple H defended the title. Goldberg continued his feud with Triple H and defeated him for the World Heavyweight Championship at Unforgiven on 21 September, having agreed to put his career at risk. The next night at Raw , Goldberg successfully defended his title against Chris Jericho. The following week at Raw , Triple H issued a $ 100,000 reward to anyone who could issue Goldberg. Steven Richards, Mark Henry, La RÃ © union and Tommy Dreamer all tried to collect the bounty, but they did not succeed. On October 20th episode of Raw Batista garnered a bounty after he intervened in Goldberg's defense against Shawn Michaels and attacked Goldberg, placing a folding chair around Goldberg's ankle and jumping from the middle rope to the seat, destroying his ankle. Angry, Goldberg demanded a match against Batista, but Triple H engaged in a match by trying to paralyze Goldberg, who executed a spear in Triple H and attacked Batista with a hammer. At the Survivor Series on November 16, Goldberg retained the title against Triple H despite a disruption from Evolution. On the November 17th episode of Raw Goldberg faced Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista in a flawed match, but he pinned following RKO Batista Bomb and < i> Pedigree . After the game, Kane suddenly came out to help Goldberg after the Evolution continued their attack after the game. After frightening Evolution, he lit Goldberg and executed chokeslam on him. The following week at Raw Kane attacked Goldberg again as he defended the championship against Triple H in a rematch of the Survivor Series and expressed his desire to face Goldberg for the title. General Manager Raw Eric Bischoff scheduled Goldberg to defend the championship against Kane and Triple H in a three-match match at Armageddon. Goldberg teamed up with Shawn Michaels and Rob Van Dam to confront and defeat Kane, Batista and Orton in a six-player team match. On December 8th episode Raw , Goldberg faces Kane in a falling game which ends with a disqualification when Evolution and Mark Henry enter the ring and attack Goldberg. At Armageddon on December 14, Goldberg lost the title when Triple H pinched him after an annoyance from Evolution and chokeslam from Kane, ending his reign in 84 days.

The Survivor series also marks the first time Goldberg meets WWE Champion Brock Lesnar by harassing Lesnar after the latter says that he can beat anyone in the world. The hostility increased at Rumble Royal 2004 on January 25, when Goldberg was in the middle of dominating the Royal Rumble game (he removed Charlie Haas, Billy Gunn and Nunzio) as the 30th participant until Lesnar intervened in the game and executed F- 5 at Goldberg. Furiously turning his attention to Lesnar's attack, Goldberg was knocked out by Kurt Angle. Vowing revenge after defeating Mark Henry and Jonathan Coachman in an unqualified qualifying match Raw , Goldberg declares Lesnar the next victim. On February 2, Goldberg was given a front-row ticket to No Way Out by Stone Cold Steve Austin. Smackdown! General Manager Paul Heyman appeared on Raw, and along with Mr. McMahon attempted to get Goldberg to leave Lesnar, but Goldberg executed a spear at Heyman and accidentally executed a spear in Austin when he targeted McMahon. Goldberg attends No Way Out as a fan, faces Lesnar at the event and, after some humiliation by Lesnar, enters the ring and replies to F-5 from Lesnar with Jackhammer , before being arrested and escorted out of the arena by security guards. During the main event between Lesnar and Eddie Guerrero on February 15, Goldberg reappeared from the crowd and sacrificed the Lesnar title. Lesnar then demanded a match with Goldberg at WrestleMania XX on March 14, with Austin serving as a special guest referee. Fans knew this would be the final WWE match for both Goldberg and Lesnar, and thus gave the most negative reaction during the show. Goldberg won the game, causing Lesnar to show Austin the middle finger, but instead he received the Stone Cold Stunner in return, and when Goldberg celebrated his victory with Austin, he also received a very beautiful Stone Cold. Legends of Wrestling (2015-2016) h3>

Goldberg returned to professional wrestling on June 7, 2015 at the Legends of Wrestling event at Citi Field in New York. While he is not scheduled to wrestle at the event, Goldberg comes to help Rob Van Dam after his match with Scott Steiner. He speared at Steiner and Jackhammer in Doc Gallows.

On January 23, 2016, Goldberg made a second comeback for the Legends of Wrestling show in Miami, where he sent another spear to Steiner after his match with Chavo Guerrero.

Return to WWE

Feud with Brock Lesnar (2016-2017)

On May 31, 2016, Goldberg was announced as a pre-order bonus for the upcoming WWE 2K17 video game . Throughout the summer, Goldberg and WWE 2K17 cover stars and former competitors Brock Lesnar were mutually insulted through social media and WWE 2K events such as Gamescom. Goldberg will also appear on the SummerSlam WWE 2K weekend before the pay-per-view event, sparking speculation that he will appear on the show to face Lesnar. Goldberg later appeared in the October 3 episode of SportsCenter, where he contemplated his return to WWE. This led Paul Heyman to challenge Goldberg to face Lesnar on the October 10th episode of Raw, with Heyman stating that Goldberg was the only blame on WWE Lesnar's career, when Goldberg defeated Lesnar at WrestleMania XX in 2004. Sunday next in Raw , Goldberg returned to WWE for the first time in twelve years, accepting Heyman's challenge and signaling that Lesnar would be next and last. On October 24th episode Raw , Lesnar returns with Heyman, who insults Goldberg. It was then announced that their match would take place in the Survivor Series. On October 31st episode Raw , Goldberg returned to Lesnar's comment address from the previous week, only to be interrupted by Heyman, who teased that Lesnar was there, but Rusev came out instead. Goldberg executes Jackhammer on Rusev and spears at Heyman. In the final Raw before the Survivor Series, Goldberg and Lesnar had faces off, generating a commotion with security. At the Survivor Series on November 20, Goldberg defeated Lesnar in one minute and twenty-six seconds.

The next night at Raw Goldberg celebrates his victory over Lesnar and declares himself the first participant in the Royal Rumble 2017 game. The following week at Raw Heyman talks about the Survivor Series match, stating that they has underestimated Goldberg and that the game is an affront and a shame for him and Lesnar, who will also be in a Royal Rumble match as he has something to prove. Goldberg returns on January 2, 2017 episode of Raw where he meets Chris Jericho and WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens, declaring that he will win the Royal Rumble match and challenge for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 33. Roman Government and Braun Strowman then went out to face Goldberg, Owens and Jericho, and after looking down, Goldberg and Reigns made a double spear at Strowman. Goldberg reappeared again on January 23rd episode Raw , where he was confronted by Lesnar and The Undertaker. During the Royal Rumble match on January 29, Goldberg came in at number 28 and got rid of Lesnar after a brief confrontation and a spear, and got rid of Rusev and Luke Harper before being eliminated by The Undertaker.

Lesnar then appeared on the next night's episode of Raw and challenged Goldberg to the last game at WrestleMania 33. Goldberg will continue to accept Lesnar's challenge on the February 6th episode of Raw while interrupting Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho in the process. Goldberg will challenge Owens for the Universal Championship game at Fastlane with Jericho receiving on Owens' behalf and the match was made official that night. On February 27th episode of Raw Goldberg and Owens had one last confrontation with Goldberg who claimed that if he would win the Universal Championship, he would defend it against Lesnar in WrestleMania 33. At Fastlane on March 5, after the disruption from Jericho (whom Owens betrayed and attacked on the February 13 episode of Raw ), Goldberg defeated Owens to win the Universal Championship. The next night at Raw , Goldberg was confronted by Lesnar, who executed the F-5 at Goldberg. In the final Raw before WrestleMania, Goldberg replied with a spear in Lesnar. At WrestleMania 33 on April 2, despite four spears and Jackhammer, Goldberg lost the title for Lesnar in what was also the first clean single. Goldberg showed up the following night at Raw Talk (which aired on WWE Network after Raw broadcast) to say goodbye to fans, but ultimately did not close the possibility of returning in the future.

WWE Hall of Fame (2018)

On January 15, 2018, ESPN announces that Goldberg will be inaugurated as the headliner of the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2018. This is then confirmed on Raw when it was announced by WWE. On March 25, WWE announced that Paul Heyman would inaugurate Goldberg to the Hall of Fame. During his speech receiving the award, he discussed various wrestlers who helped him gain his public status, and his view of professional wrestling as a whole, which has become much more positive over the years.
