About Sister Carmelite

The way of life of the Carmelite Sister of the Sacred Heart of Los Angeles is rooted in the Gospel, Church, and Carmelite spirituality that lives through the charism of their founder, Mary Maria Maria Luisa Josefa of the Blessed Sacrament. Their mission statement is threefold: "Educate Life with the Mind and Heart of Christ" in school; to "On Family Services for Life" through the elders; and "Fostering a Deeper Spiritual Life" through individual and group retreats.

History

In the 1920s during the revolution and religious persecution in Mexico, Mrs. Luisita set up schools, hospitals and orphanages despite being scrutinized by the government. The very persecution that tried to destroy his work only spread to other lands when Ms. Luisita and her two colleagues entered the United States as religious refugees in 1927. They built roots in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

The community has grown from humble beginnings with 3 sisters in 1927. Today, the Carmelite Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Los Angeles have grown to 143 approved sisters.
