History

During the 1960s, residents and doctors in Chesapeake, Virginia decided they needed a hospital in the city so they did not have to go to Norfolk for treatment. Dr. Stanley Jennings, a Chesapeake doctor, started a grassroots effort to set up Chesapeake General Hospital in the newly founded town. In 1966, the Virginia General Assembly created the Chesapeake Hospital Authority responsible for the operation of the Chesapeake General Hospital. Although the members of the Authority are appointed by the Chesapeake City Council, it is an autonomous organization with enabling legislation.

In the early 1970s, after gaining co-operation from city officials, community members began door-to-door requests and organized sporting events, cake sales, dinners and other fundraising to raise $ 1.2 million for the construction of the hospital. The newly established Chesapeake Housing Firm in this city earns additional funding through a $ 1 million federal grant Hill-Burton. In 1973, construction began in hospital. The newly appointed CEO Donald S. Buckley started operating from a trailer at a construction site on Battlefield Boulevard in town. Chesapeake General Hospital first opened its doors on January 26, 1976. Donald Buckley served as president/CEO until his retirement in 2005.

In 2005, Chris Mosley was appointed President & amp; CEO of Chesapeake General Hospital. In 2007, Chris Mosley conducted an extensive rebranding and decided at the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, "to more accurately reflect the range of organizational services and patient base...". When Mosley left CRMC in 2010, Wynn Dixon was chosen as his successor.

In 2010, the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center has grown to include an anchor hospital with 310 beds, Sidney M. Oman Cancer Center, Breast Center, Chesapeake Diagnostic Center, The BirthPlace, Chesapeake Surgery Center, Lifestyle Center for fitness and wellness, two sleep centers, assisted living facilities (Cedar Manor Centralized Treatment Center), home and nursing home programs and physician practice groups. Chesapeake Regional is also a partner at 19-bed Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, North Carolina, with University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina. In 2010, the emergency department received more than 65,000 visits.

Peter Bastone joins CRMC in 2013 as President & amp; CEO and renamed the healthcare system to Chesapeake Regional Healthcare to better represent the services offered outside the hospital building.

The Chesapeake Regional Medical Center employs approximately 2,400 employees and has 600 medical staff. It is administered by the Chesapeake Hospital Authority, composed of 11 members appointed by the Chesapeake City Council.

Mr. Reese Jackson, JD, MHA, FACHE is installed as President & amp; CEO of Chesapeake Regional Healthcare on December 1, 2016.
