The CMA credential (AAMA) represents a medical assistant who has been certified by the American Association of Medical Assistant Certification Bodies (AAMA). CMA (AAMA) is awarded to candidates who have successfully completed the CMA Certification/Certification Certification (AAMA) managed by the AAMA Certification Board. This credential is valid throughout the United States, and requires recertification every 60 months. CMA (AAMA) is the only allied health expert required to graduate from an accredited secondary medical support program that focuses on training for work in medical offices, clinics, and other outpatient centers.

The CMA (AAMA) Certification/Certification Exam is taken from an in-depth analysis of the general, clinical, and administrative tasks performed by the medical assistant on a daily basis, according to the Work Analysis of CMA (AAMA). The National Medical Examination Agency (NBME) serves as a test consultant for the exam.
The inquiry question is formulated by the AAMA Certification Board Assembly Task For Test Construction, a group of medical practitioners, doctors, and educator medical educators from across the United States. Along with NBME, the Task Force updated the CMA Exam (AAMA) to reflect changes in the daily responsibilities of medical assistants, as well as developments in medical knowledge and technology. The exam tests knowledge in three key areas: general medical knowledge (eg, terminology and anatomy), administrative knowledge (eg, management and processing of insurance), and clinical knowledge (eg, medical preparation and pharmacology).
In order to qualify for the exam, an applicant must be graduated from a medical assistance program accredited by the Accreditation Commission of the Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or the Bureau of Health Education School Accreditation (ABHES). The exam is offered year-round at the national test center.

Re-certification of CMA (AAMA) credentials
Every 60 months, CMA (AAMA) is required to maintain the flow of credentials by resertification. The credential must be current for the medical assistant to use it in connection with the job. A CMA holder (AAMA) can authorize one of two ways: by obtaining 60 points of recertification through continuing education, or by taking back and passing the CMA Certification/Certification Exam (AAMA).
