Discovery Station , is a family-friendly museum in downtown Hagerstown, Maryland, United States that opened to the public in 2005. The museum's focus is to create an environment that stimulates curiosity for discovery, exploration, and more investigation go through exhibitions and programs focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (UAP) principles. The museum is a member of the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC), the Alliance of American Museums (AAM), and the NASA Museum Alliance.

The museum is located in a historic bank building opposite the Washington Court Building. The original bank was housed in the Federal Depository during the Civil War. Visitors can enter the main safes and examine the doors and mechanisms of leaded glass mamutnya. With its white marble exterior and towering palladium windows, this building is one of the most important architecturally in downtown Hagerstown.

Discovery Station is visited by thousands of visitors every year and is very popular among children.

Exhibition

LEGOÃ,® Robotics Education Exhibition

The exhibition contains three sections. The first part focuses on the construction and programming of LEGOÃ,® MINDSTORMSÃ,® Education EV3s. The second section features two LEGOÃ,® MINDSTORMSÃ,® Education EV3 Arena Challenges, where visitors can compete with each other. Finally, the third section focuses on real-world robotics applications.

LEGOÃ,® Robotics and Education exhibit and related programs conducted by Discovery Station at Hagerstown, Inc. not affiliated, sponsored, or endorsed by LEGO Education or The LEGO Group.

Dinosaur Exhibit

A full-scale cast model of the Triceratops skull acquired by Discovery Station is being exhibited. Included in the Dinosaur Exhibit are fossil tracking, dinosaur excavations, literature, and other interactive activities that provide a hands-on learning experience.

Space and Beyond Exhibit

A quarter model of the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft is on display. The exhibit also touches on the future of space exploration and the colonization of Mars.

Discovery Station Race Car Derby

This live exhibit features a large-scale car racing track for toy cars. The screen teaches children and adults the basics of kinetic and potential energy.

Hagerstown Aviation Exhibit

Exhibits include electronic equipment and displays, experimental Papoose aircraft built in Washington County, and Cessna 150 that is hand-friendly, child-friendly, interactive with full instrumentation and indicators. Visitors to the museum can sit in the cockpit and take turns working on the controls.

The 1/5 replica of the famous PT-19 trainer is on the permanent display of the late Jack Garrott, who piloted PT-19 during World War II and built a flyable model.

Pameran RMS Titanic

The exact replica of the Titanic RMS is on display at Discovery Station. This is one of the greatest models of the legendary ship ever built and it took ten years to build it. Created by Norman Little from the original plan and drawing of the ship, a plane that can be navigated one-sixty times over fifteen feet in length, weighs 500 pounds, and contains more than a thousand peepholes. Authentic fittings, stained glass, and passenger replicas add to the realism and historical accuracy of the Titanic exhibit.

This award-winning Titanic model has been featured on TV, in newspapers and magazines, and on the cover of Model Tech magazine. It's deserving of the ocean and has been sailing with radio controls in the waterways in Florida, where it's built.

Discovery Station will open a new exhibit by the end of 2016. It is an ongoing "Sustainability Exhibition" that will allow visitors to explore the impact of applying renewable energy practices to their daily lives while enabling them to become sustainable future practitioners.

In 2017, Discovery Station will also open a new exhibition called " STEAM Machine: Moving Ahead With The Future ". This live exhibit will cover many STEAM principles.

Weekly program

Discovery Station holds weekly science experiments and STEAM activities every Saturday. This "Saturday Plus Program" is free at the price of admission to Discovery Station and is usually direct.

Status

Discovery Station in Hagerstown, Inc. governed by a board of volunteers whose members serve without compensation. Members serve a period of three years. Currently, Discovery Station has only one paid staff member. Programs and activities are conducted by officials and directors who are assisted by a group of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers from across the region.

Discovery Station in Hagerstown, Inc. is a private nonprofit organization, incorporated in the State of Maryland on July 5, 1996. The Discovery Station is a tax exemption under Section 501 (c) (3) of the US Internal Revenue Code, as of March 11, 1997. Discovery Station is a registered charity, at Maryland State Secretary's Office, Charity Organization Division (phone: 410.974.5534).

Fundraisers

Discovery Station hosts several fund-raisers throughout the year to offset costs associated with operations, program development and exhibition making.

  • Casino Royale - This fundraiser is the night of a casino game held in Hagerstown, MD every year.
  • Superhero 5k - This is a 5k themed game held in Hagerstown, MD every year.
  • Discovery Golf Classic - This golf tournament is an ongoing shared fundraiser between Discovery Station and Hagerstown Lions Club.
  • Hangarfest - This show is a rock concert held at the Rider Jet Center in Hagerstown, MD. Discovery Station hosted this event with Cumberland Valley Breast Cancer Awareness.
  • Surgeon vs. Chef - This event is a pumpkin engraving competition between a local surgeon and a chef. It was held at Springfield Barn which is rustic in Williamsport, MD.
