Independent senior life (also known as the retirement community, the senior living community or an independent retired community) is housing designed for seniors aged 55 and older.

Independent senior living communities generally provide apartments, but some also offer cottages, condominiums, and single-family homes. Residents include elderly people who do not need help with day-to-day activities or skilled nursing 24/7, but can benefit from convenient services, a senior-friendly environment, and increased social opportunities offered by an independent senior community.

The independent senior living community is also popular among snowbird seniors who want to skimp or travel freely without the burden of managing a home.

Many retire communities offer meal services, basic housekeeping and laundry services, transportation to appointments and assignments, activities, social programs, and access to sports equipment. Some also offer emergency alert systems, live-in managers, and facilities such as swimming pools, spas, clubhouses, and beauty salons and barber on site.

Independent senior living properties do not provide health care or assistance with daily life activities (ADL) such as treatment, bathing, eating, dressing, defecating and more. Independent elderly life differs from the community of ongoing care, which offers independent living along with other levels of care, such as assisted care and skilled care, in a single residence.

Independent live citizens are allowed to use third-party home health care services to meet additional needs.

Total operational population capacity for independent independent living communities in the United States is 245,000. Holiday Pensions is the largest single independent living provider with a population capacity of 40,440 in 315 pension communities across the US and Canada.

  • Senior Apartments : The most common independent elderly life type. Services typically include recreation programs, transportation, and food services.
  • Housing Unit : A senior community offering single-family homes, couplings, mobile homes, townhouses, cottages, or condominiums. Some communities are tied to a sophisticated, self-contained, senior living community of apartments. Citizens can have the option to rent or buy.

  • Subsidized Housing : The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides communities for low-income seniors. Subsidized communities usually adhere to strict criteria and may have long waiting lists.
  • The Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC) : Communities with a large senior population but were originally not designed for the elderly. It evolves naturally as an age-in-place person over time or migrates into the same area. They were not created to meet the needs of seniors.

Ordinary occupants

The typical senior high-life community residents are people aged 55 years or older who are mentally and physically capable of living alone without skilled parenting or assistance with daily activities. Some residents may need help with some activities of daily life and can obtain third-party home health care services.

Elderly who may benefit from poor home maintenance and increased access to nutritious food, social interaction, physical and mental stimulation, and transportation make senior citizens an ideal independent living.

Guided living vs. independent senior life

The most significant difference between assisted living and independent senior living is the care provided. Residents from living assisted facilities need help with daily activities such as medicine, meals, bathing, dressing, and toilets. Residents of the specially built independent independent living complex have taken an active decision to improve their quality of life by staying in safe and low-care homes. The elderly who choose to live in the assisted retirement complex will often need more attention and support to improve their quality of life. There are about 50,000 personal senior life developments in the UK alone, which are not enough to meet the growing demand of more and more retirees. It has been predicted that by 2020, 19.3% of the UK population will be 65 and a minimum of 35,000 new senior life development properties will need to be made to meet housing demand.

Independent elderly people can live on their own with limited assistance (provided by third-party home health care providers where necessary) and without supervision at all times. Neither life assisted nor self-sustaining communities have provided the 24/7 skilled care provided in a nursing home.

Cost

Independent senior living communities are the least expensive of the three major senior life choices. Monthly fees vary significantly based on the type of community, apartment size, location and services offered. The average total cost for a one-bedroom independent US one-bedroom senior apartment is $ 2,750 per month.

In 2011, the average rate for private rooms in US nursing homes was $ 239 per day, or nearly $ 7,270 per month. The average rate for a private living room in a live assisted community is $ 3,477 per month. Sustainable maintenance communities require entry fees ranging from $ 20,000 to $ 500,000, in addition to monthly fees ranging from $ 500 to $ 3,000 or more depending on the service.
