The serial killer of Long Island (also referred to as LISK , Gilgo Beach Killer or Craigslist Ripper ) is a serial killer suspicious who allegedly killed 10 to 16 people associated with prostitution, for nearly 20 years, and dumped their bodies along the Ocean Parkway, near the remote Long Island, coastal towns of Gilgo and Oak on New York Beach in Suffolk County, and area Jones Beach State Park in Nassau County. The remains of four victims were found in December 2010, while six remaining sets were found in March and April 2011. Police believe that the final sets of these remnants predate four bodies discovered in December 2010.
On May 9, 2011, authorities suspect that the two latest residual devices may be the work of the second killer. However, on November 29, 2011, the police announced their belief that one person was responsible for all 10 deaths, and that they did not believe the case of Shannan Gilbert, a missing bodyguard before the first corpse collection was found, was linked. "It is clear that the area in and around Gilgo Beach has been used to dispose of human remains for some time," said Suffolk County Attorney Thomas Spota.

Police investigation
Police initially sought out Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old woman from New Jersey, who worked as a bodyguard and was reportedly missing on May 1, 2010. She was last seen in the Long Island area after she ran away from, instead of, her driver, Michael Pak, waiting for her at outside of clients' homes in adjacent Oak Beach.
In December 2010, a police officer and his dog, on a regular exercise, found the first corpse: "the remains of a woman's skeleton in an almost ruined burlap." The discovery caused three more bodies to be found two days later in the same area, on the north side of the Ocean Parkway. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said: "Four bodies found in the same location speak enough for themselves, this is more than a coincidence.We can have a serial killer."
A few months later, in late March and early April 2011, four bodies were found in other areas outside the parkway. Suffolk Police expanded the search area to the Nassau County border, searching for more casualties. On April 6, Detective Lieutenant Kevin Smith of the Nassau County Police Department said that his office would "explore further and investigate any criminal activity that might be near the remains of a man found recently discovered in Suffolk." Smith also said that Nassau County Police would coordinate with Suffolk County and the New York State Police on investigation.
Five days later, more corpse searches began in Nassau County. Local media reported that additional sets of partial human remains were found, as well as separate skulls, resulting in the potential number of victims found since December to ten. On April 22, two human teeth were found about a foot away from the skull. On June 16, Suffolk police raised prizes from $ 5,000 to $ 25,000 (the largest ever offered in county history) for information leading to the arrest in the murders of Long Island.
On September 20, police released a joint sketch of two unidentified victims whose bodies were found in March and April (an Asian man and Jane Doe No. 6), as well as jewelry photographs found on the remains of a toddler and him. mother, was found on April 4 and 11 respectively. The toddler's mother was also revealed as one of a collection of remains found in Nassau County on April 11. Also on Sept. 20, police revealed that the second remaining collection found in Nassau County on April 11 matches the two legs found in the trash. bag that had been washed in Fire Island in 1996. On September 22, 2011, police have received over 1,200 tips via text, email, and phone since the beginning of the investigation.
On November 29, police announced that they believed one person was responsible for all 10 murders, and that the person was almost certainly from Long Island. On December 13, Shannan Gilbert's remains were found in a swamp about half a mile from where he disappeared; just a week before, some clothes and stuff were found around the same. Police believe that Shannan accidentally drowned after stumbling into a swamp, a view not shared by his mother. She was last seen banging the door in a house and screaming for help before running into the night. The frantic 911 phone call from Gilbert that night included him saying that they would kill him.
On December 10, 2015, Suffolk Police announced that the FBI had officially joined the investigation. An FBI spokesman confirmed the announcement. The FBI had previously assisted in the search for victims, but had never officially been part of the investigation until this announcement.
On September 12, 2017, it was announced that the Long Island carpenter and the convicted killer John Bittrolff were suspects in at least one of the murders that were linked to the Long Island Serial killer.

The identity of the killer
There is much speculation in the media about the identity of the killer, now known as "Unsub" (unknown subject). It has been suggested that serial killers are likely to be white men in their mid-20s to mid 40s who are very familiar with South Shore Long Island and have access to burlap sacks, which he uses to hold the body. He may have detailed knowledge of law enforcement techniques, and may even be related to law enforcement, which has so far helped him avoid detection. Some have speculated that serial killers and former Long Islander Joel Rifkin may be responsible for some of the old relics found in March and April 2011, because the four bodies of victims were never found. In an April 2011 prison interview with Newsday , Rifkin denied anything to do with the remains discovered recently.

James Burke
On December 15, 2016, Shannan Gilbert family lawyer said there was a connection between Suffolk's former Chief Constable James Burke and the murder. There was a rumor that Burke was often involved with prostitutes, and a companion came to the front claiming that he had "rough sex" with Burke during the Oak Beach party where he was choking. It was also revealed that Burke deliberately blocked the FBI's investigation of the LISK case during his time as police chief. In November 2016, Burke was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison, along with three years of supervised release, for hitting a man who stole a backpack containing sex toys and pornography from his vehicle. Burke pleaded guilty in February for violations of civil rights and conspiracy to deter justice.
John Bittrolff
John Bittrolff, a Suffolk county resident who was convicted of the murder of two prostitutes in 1993 and 1994, was a suspect in the murder of a third woman of that time period, named as a suspect in at least one of the LISK killings on September 12, 2017. The Suffolk district attorney, Robert Biancavilla released a statement stating that Bittrolf was most likely responsible for the deaths of other women, and that there were similarities between the Gilgo Beach crime scene and the known Bittrolff murder. Bittrolff was a carpenter who lived in Manorville, where LISK torso victims Jessica Taylor and "Jane Doe No. 6" were found. Remnants were found about three miles away from Bittrolff's house. He is also a hunter who seems to enjoy killing and chopping animals, and is reported to have "cut the heart of a deer he just shot and ate it raw in the forest". Neighbors also remember him killing small animals when he was younger. Another connection between Bittrolff and the LISK case became clear when it was revealed that the grown daughter of Rita Tangredi, one of Bittrolff's known victims, was reported as a "good friend" with Melissa Barthelemy, one of the victims of Gilgo Beach. Mrs Barthelemy also reported that Melissa "had been calling Manorville from her phone" at the time.
Joseph Brewer
Joseph Brewer, a resident of Oak Beach, was one of the last to see Shannan Gilbert alive. He was hired by Brewer as a companion on the eve of his disappearance after posting an ad on Craigslist. Brewer alleges that shortly after Gilbert arrived at his residence, he began acting irregularly before fleeing from his home into the night. Gilbert was then seen running across Oak Beach, banging on the door of the house in the Brewer neighborhood. It was around Gilbert making a phone call to 9-1-1 claiming that "they tried to kill him". However, the police found no evidence of any error, and Brewer was quickly cleared as a suspect.
Dr. Peter Hackett
Two days after the disappearance of Shannan, his mother, Mari Gilbert, received a phone call from Dr. Peter Hackett, a resident of Oak Beach and Brewer's neighbor. Hackett allegedly told Mari that he was keeping Shannan, and that he "manages the house for the recalcitrant girls." Five days after Gilbert's disappearance, Hackett makes another phone call to Mari where he strongly refuses to get in touch with Shannan, or ever calls his mother. However, phone records later confirmed that Hackett called Mari twice after disappearing. The swampy area where Shannan's remains are finally found is also recorded close to Hackett's backyard. Furthermore, the Gilbert family filed a wrong death suit against Hackett in November 2012, claiming that he took Shannan to his home that morning and gave him medicine, facilitating his death. However, it was later revealed that Hackett had a history of putting himself into, or exaggerating his role in certain major events. This included his role in the TWA Flight 800 investigation. The police also noted that Hackett's wife and two children were at home on the eve of Shannan's disappearance, and would have to be aware or involved in any violations that occurred that night. Police later ruled out Hackett as a suspect in the deaths of Shannan and LISK victims.
James Bissett
Rumors and suspicions grew after the suicide of local businessman and aquarium owner James Bissett about possible links with the LISK case. Bissett committed suicide two days after Shannan's remains were found. Speculation grows when it is revealed that Bissett also has a nursery, and has access to a large number of burlap. However, the police denied that Bissett had ever been an attractive person or suspect in the case.

Of the ten bodies or sets discovered since late 2010, four found in December 2010 have been identified as missing sex workers who all advertise their services on Craiglist. They have all been strangled and their bodies wrapped in burlap sacks before being dumped along Gilgo Beach. All believed to have been murdered elsewhere.
Identified
- Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, from Norwich, Connecticut, is a bodyguard who advertise his services online. Maureen, who was only four feet eleven inches and a hundred and five pounds, traveled to Long Island, "spending the day in New York City," and was never seen again. Maureen, a struggling mother, worked as a paid companion from Craigslist to pay her mortgage at home, but after successfully leaving the sex industry for seven months, Maureen finally returned to work to pay her bills after receiving eviction notice. She was last seen on July 9, 2007, when she left Norwich to New York City. His body was found in December 2010.
- Melissa Barthelemy, 24, from Erie County, New York, disappeared on July 10, 2009. She has lived in the Bronx and worked as a companion through Craigslist. On the night he disappeared, he met a client, deposited $ 900 in his bank account, and tried to call an old boyfriend but to no avail. Beginning a week after his departure, and lasting five weeks, his teenage sister, Amanda, received a series of "vulgar, mocking and insulting" calls from someone who might have been a killer using her sister's cell phone. Police can track multiple calls to Madison Square Garden, downtown Manhattan, and Massapequa, but can not determine who made the call. Melissa's mother also noted that there were "many calls to Manorville" from Melissa's phone around as she disappeared.
- Megan Waterman, 22, from South Portland, Maine, lost on June 6, 2010, after placing an ad on Craigslist as a companion. The day before, she told her 20-year-old boyfriend that she would be out and would call her later. By the time he disappeared, he was staying at a motel in Hauppauge, New York, 15 miles northeast of Gilgo Beach. His body was also found in December 2010. Amber Lynn Costello, 27, from Babylon North, New York, a town ten miles north of Gilgo Beach, was a sex worker and a heroin user who disappeared on September 2, 2010. On the night she disappeared, she went to meet people stranger who called him several times and offered $ 1,500 for his services. In 2012, Costello's sister, Kimberly Overstreet, a call girl, has vowed to use the same Craigslist booking system as her sister in an attempt to lure the killer.
Still found in March and April 2011
The four relics found on March 29 and April 4 are all two miles and east of what was discovered in December. They include two women, a man, and a toddler. The skull and bundle of remains were discovered on April 11 after the search extended to Nassau County. They were found about a mile apart, about five miles west of what was discovered in December.

- Jessica Taylor, 20, most recently in Manhattan, disappeared in July 2003. On July 26, 2003, her naked and dismembered body, missing her head and arms, was found 45 miles east of Gilgo Beach in Manorville, New York; these remains are identified by DNA analysis later that year. Taylor's body was found on a pile of scrap wood at the end of a paved access road from Halsey Manor Road, just to the north where he crossed the Long Island Expressway. Plastic sheeting is found under the torso, and tattoos on his body have been mutilated with sharp instruments. On May 9, 2011, it was reported that the remains of a skull, pair of hands, and arms were discovered on March 29 in Gilgo's Taygo. He had worked in Washington, D.C., and Manhattan as a prostitute. The remains of "Jane Doe No. 6" are also found in Manorville (torso) and in Gilgo Beach (head, hand and foot).
Unidentified
- "Jane Doe No. 6": A head, right leg, and human hand, discovered on April 4, is determined to be an unknown victim, the rest of his body was found on November 19, 2000, in that part from Manorville where most of Jessica Taylor's remains are found. The victim's body was found wrapped in a garbage bag and dumped in the woods near the intersection of Halsey Manor Rd and Mill Rd, adjacent to a set of power lines and the nearest access point. Her right leg has been cut high above the ankle, possibly to hide the mark or tattoo. Former Jessica Taylor and "Jane Doe No. 6" are thrown away in the same way and in the same city, showing a relationship. Researchers reported that the victim had a heart-shaped peach tattoo tattoo with a bite from it and two drops falling from the core on her left breast. Then, on April 11, 2011, police in Nassau County found pieces of human being cut into pieces in plastic bags near Jones Beach State Park, dubbed "Jane Doe No. 3". DNA analysis identified this victim as the mother of "Baby Doe." She was found wearing jewelry similar to "Baby Doe." In December 2016, Peaches and Jane Doe No. 3 positively identified as the same individual.
- "Jane Doe No. 7": Also on April 11, near Tobay Beach, a separate human skull and several teeth were found. These remnants were connected by DNA testing to a broken set of legs found in a garbage bag on the Fire Island on April 20, 1996.
