Cellco partnerships, d/b/a Verizon Wireless (usually abbreviated as Verizon , and distillation as verizon ), is an American telecommunications company that offers wireless products and services. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Verizon Communications. With 149 million subscribers as of October 2017, Verizon Wireless is the largest wireless telecommunications provider in the United States.
The company is headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. The company was founded in 2000 as a joint venture of the American telecommunications company, Bell Atlantic, which will soon become Verizon Communications, and the British multinational telecommunications company Vodafone. Verizon Communications became the sole owner in 2014 after buying 45% of Vodafone's shares in the company.
It operates a nationwide 4G LTE network covering about 98 percent of the US population, which in December 2015 won or tied for the top award in each RootScore RootMetrics Report category. Verizon Wireless offers mobile phone services through various devices. Its LTE in the American Rural Program, with 21 participating rural wireless operators, includes 2.7 million potential users in 169 rural districts. Verizon Wireless announced in 2015 that they are developing a 5G network, or the fifth generation.

In September 1999, American telephone company Bell Atlantic and US-based Vodafone Airtouch PLC proposed they would make a new $ 70 billion wireless phone service business. The joint venture was created when Bell Atlantic merged with GTE Corporation. In April 2000, the company announced that the Bell Atlantic-GTE merger would take the name Verizon and that Bell Atlantic-Vodafone wireless unit would be called Verizon Wireless (legally Cellco Partnership d/b/a Verizon Wireless). Verizon Communications owns 55 percent of Verizon Wireless while Vodafone retains 45 percent ownership. The regulator with the Federal Communications Commission approved the Bell Atlantic-GTE merger of June 16, 2000, creating the largest wireless company in the US. Verizon Wireless holds this market position until Cingular acquires AT & amp; T Wireless Services in 2004.
Throughout the 2000s, Verizon acquired several wireless phone companies and assets across the country, including West Virginia Wireless in 2006; Ramcell in 2007; Rural Cellular Corporation and SureWest Communications, both in 2008. Also in 2008, Verizon reached an agreement to buy Alltel for $ 5.9 billion in equities while assuming $ 22.2 billion of debt. The deal, which was completed January 9, 2009, once again makes Verizon Wireless the largest mobile phone network in the country. As per the agreement, Verizon sells rural wireless properties in 18 states to AT & amp; T. The properties are in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming. The majority owner of Verizon Communications became the sole owner of its wireless business in 2014, when it bought 45% of Vodafone shares. Vodafone received $ 58.9 billion in cash, $ 60.2 billion in shares and $ 11 billion in other transactions. In August 2016, Verizon hired Ronan Dunne, the former head of UK provider O2, as the new president of his wireless business.
In September 2016, Comcast confirmed that it plans to launch a mobile service, using Verizon's network as MVNO, by mid-2017.
In February 2017, amid competition from Sprint and T-Mobile, and an initiative to expand capacity and improve network quality by using macrocells and supporting carrier aggregation, Verizon announced that it would bring back "unlimited" data plans (subject to blocking in heavy network area after 22 GB usage). Verizon's decision not to limit the video service bitrate prompted Sprint and T-Mobile to remove similar restrictions from their own plans.
In March 2017, Verizon announced that all of their Android phones will have AppFlash, to help users find content and services across apps. Criticism speaks loudly against it.
On June 8, 2018, Verizon announced Hans Vestberg has been elected CEO on August 1, 2018.

Network
Verizon Wireless operates a 4G LTE network, which, in January 2016, covers about 98 percent of the US. Before their LTE network launches, they operate the CDMA2000 network exclusively (other major CDMA2000 carriers in the US are Sprint). Verizon started the initial test for LTE 4G network in 2008 to move from long-term mobile communications technology to emerging global standards. In December 2010, Verizon Wireless launched its newly developed 4G LTE network in 39 markets. In December 2011, just a year after launch, 200 million Americans were covered with 4G LTE, and 190 markets were closed. By 2016, 98% percent of the US is covered with LTE, and 92% of all data traffic uses LTE.
In 2012, service providers purchased the spectrum of the country's largest cable company, including Comcast, and Spectrum (Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks at the time) to improve its data network across the US. The new capacity allows Verizon to launch what it calls XLTE (LTE on Band 4) in 2013, providing more capacity in a densely packed market.
Since 4G LTE is a data transmission network, when launched, Verizon's customer voice calls are still being made on the company's CDMA2000 network, developed for 3G phones. In September 2014, Verizon launched voice over LTE (VoLTE); this allowed voice call to transmit via LTE data network only. It also allows simultaneous voice and data services, something not available on traditional CDMA2000 calls. Together with VoLTE, Verizon also announced support for HD Voice, which provides higher quality audio for VoLTE calls, and original Video Calling for Android phones. As of March 2016, Verizon enables support for Wi-Fi Calls, which allows calls to be placed through Wi-Fi Networks. As of August 2015, nearly 4 million of 103.7 million Verizon customers use VoLTE.
RootMetrics's report on carrier performance in the first half of 2015 puts Verizon's network as the best in overall national performance, network reliability, network speed, data performance, and call performance. For the second half of 2015, RootScore Report from RootMetrics placed Verizon Wireless No. 1 in overall performance, network speed, network reliability, call performance and data performance. Verizon Wireless and AT & amp; T is tied for first in text performance.
In September 2015, Verizon's chief of information and technology architect Roger Gurnani stated that Verizon plans to test a 5G wireless network within 12 months, with "some level of commercial deployment" by 2017. By the end of August 2016, Verizon officially announced that launched Advanced LTE service in 461 markets. The company promotes that technology will allow at least 50% higher LTE data rates on supported devices.

Apps
Verizon Wireless offers certain applications and services exclusive to its customers. Many of these apps have been pre-loaded on Verizon devices - especially Android smart phones. The company has received criticism for this practice, because users and critics have seen the app to be an excessive "bloatware" for apps already included with the device's operating system.
The NFL Mobile app allows Verizon Wireless customers to stream the National Football League and NFL Network matches on their devices. Although previously a subscription-based service, NFL Mobile is made free for all customers starting in the 2015 NFL season. As part of the exclusivity agreement with the NFL, only Verizon Wireless customers can stream NFL to smartphones. This contract ends after the 2017 NFL season. As part of a similar deal that also provides title-bearer titles, Verizon also has exclusivity on streaming phones from the Verizon IndyCar Series race through its official app.
The My Verizon app is used for account management, including checking usage statistics and managing user service plans and account features. Verizon Cloud, which allows online photos, videos, contacts, messages and call logs synced online, was released in April 2013 initially for Android phones, followed the following month by launch for iOS. Verizon Messages , otherwise known as Message , is an alternative text messaging app that also allows messages to be synced among multiple devices. VZ Navigator is a subscription-based map and navigation service that provides turn-by-turn navigation, crowdsourced traffic data, weather lists, events and entertainment, gas prices, roadside assistance, 2D and 3D views. Verizon Support & amp; The protection application provides technical support services, lost device location, and on Android, antivirus functionality.
Verizon Family Locator is a subscription-based service and application that can be used to track the location of family members on a map for up to 10 devices. Verizon Family Base allows parents to limit when and how their children use their phones, view their child's contacts and lock the device. Verizon also offers GizmoPal, a phone worn on bracelets for children that is restricted to just placing or receiving calls from any of the two designated nannies, and having GPS tracking.
Other Verizon Wireless apps include Field Force Manager, which allows companies to manage employees with GPS, time management and travel surveillance papers, Visual Voice Mail, and Roadside Assistance.

Wireless phone service
Verizon Wireless offers smart phones supported by Apple's iOS, Google Android, Microsoft Windows Phone, and BlackBerry OS. The phone essentially uses Verizon's 3G network, while smartphones use their 4G LTE network. The company offers different voice and data plans for its users.
Wireless home phone
Introduced in February 2011 as Verizon Wireless Home Phone Connect, the Wireless Home Phone uses Verizon's cellular network instead of using a traditional landline cable to provide home phone service.
Wi-Fi and mobile broadband
Verizon Wireless sells Wi-Fi hotspot devices, including the Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot AC791L and Jetpack MiFi 6620L. Verizon Wireless's home Internet service includes a 4G Broadband LTE Router with Voice that can drive a home wireless network and connect up to 10 devices and home phones.
LTE in Rural America
LTE in the American Rural Program (or LRA program), introduced in May 2010, includes 2.7 million potential users over 225,000 miles in 169 rural districts. Under the program, partners rent the spectrum from Verizon Wireless and connect to the corporate network, and Verizon provides technical support and resources to help rural wireless companies build their own 4G LTE network. The program expands the coverage of 4G LTE for rural operators and Verizon, as customers can utilize both networks. Starting in 2015, all LRA members have fully launched their 4G LTE network.
