History
The house was built by Robert F. Stockton in 1856. The National Park Service describes the original house, patterned after Morven (18th-century house also owned by Robert Stockton) as a 2-1/2-story stone structure covered with yellow painted plaster, [with] twin rooms on the first floor, spacious rooms, high ceilings and beautiful fireplaces. "
Stockton, who is from a prominent political family, is a US Senator and ship, famous for capturing California during the Mexican-American War. Stockton's grandfather, Judge Richard Stockton, was a signatory to the Declaration of Independence. The original structure consists of three main residences around 4.5 acres of vast grass and orchards. Then, the small wings that extend from the back of the living quarters are added to the chamber and the housekeeper's stables. The wing extension is now a separate house and separated by the wall behind the house. Westland originally entered from the stone path of Bayard Lane (now Route 206). The well-maintained path is intersected by extensive grass, shaded by a large variety of pine. At the back of the house is a pear orchard and a cherry tree and a dovecote for pigeons and house doves.
Bought by Cleveland after his second term as president in 1896, the former chief executive lived there from 1897 until his death in 1908. Cleveland named him "Westland" in honor of his friend Andrew Fleming West, a professor of humanities at Princeton University who helped Cleveland. in securing home purchases. During Cleveland occupancy some changes were made to the residence. He added a two-story extension to the right side of the house, with the downstairs functioning as a billiard room. Cleveland also made some cosmetic changes to the façade of the building in the popular Italian style at the time.
Cleveland enjoyed his retirement in Westland. Although he never attended college, he accepted a seat at the Princeton Board of Supervisors, a position he considered serious, leading the committee to found a graduate school. He gave a series of four lectures attended by many at the university, which were later published as a book. Students love Cleveland, advising him on his birthday and, after a soccer game, leading the victory parade to his home. He also takes an active part in city life, maintains quick correspondence with friends, and continues to be socially and politically active. His favorite recreations are billiards and poverty club meetings, consisting of a group of colleagues who play cards regularly in Westland. He died in Westland in 1908 and is buried at Princeton Cemetery. The Cleveland Dowager, Frances, has stayed at home for many years after her death.

Current use
Always a private residence, the renovated building is currently on one and a half acres. This 6,345 square foot house is described as having 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, a formal entrance hall, as well as a dining room and living room that still contain the lis from Cleveland time there. The area includes a formal garden, swimming pool and garage. In 2015, it sold for $ 4,325,000. It is not open to the public.
