Attending physician

In the United States and Canada, doctors who attend (also known as attend , render documents , or doctors staff ) is a doctor (MD or DO) who has completed residency and medical practice at a clinic or hospital, in a specialization studied during the residency. A physician present usually oversees friends, residents, medical students, and other practitioners. Attending a doctor can also retain a professorship in an affiliated medical school. This is common if supervisory training is an important part of the doctor's job. Attending physicians have final, legal and other responsibilities, for patient care, even when many minute-to-minute decisions are being made by a resident, medical student, or Advanced Training Provider (ie physician assistant and nurse practitioner ). Doctors who come sometimes are 'rendering doctors' who are registered in the patient's official medical record, but if they supervise other residents or staff members, they are 'watching'.

Attending a doctor may also still be in training, like a colleague in a subspecialty. For example, a colleague of cardiology may serve as an internal drug present, as he has completed residency in internal medicine. This term is more often used in educational hospitals. In non teaching hospitals, basically all doctors function as participants in some cases after completing the residency.

The terms "attending physician" or "attending" also refers to the formal relationships of their inpatients and primary physicians during hospitalization, as compared with support physicians assisting primary care physicians. However, even at consulting services, in academic centers, doctors who have completed their training are called attending or consulting, as opposed to resident doctors.
