College career

After graduating from high school as a farewell speaker, Walker played back for the University of Georgia, where he was three times All-American (soccer and track) and 1982 Heisman Cup winner and Maxwell Award. He is the only player in NCAA history to finish in the top three in Heisman voting in all three college seasons. He is the only NCAA player who only played three years to finish in the top ten in a very close distance. During his first season in 1980, Walker set a new record for NCAA students and took third place in the Heisman vote. Walker is the first "true freshman" to become the All-American main team.

He played a major role in helping Georgia avoid that year's defeat and win the national championship with a victory over Notre Dame at Sugar Bowl. He won the Heisman as a junior. In 1999, Walker was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame and is considered one of the greatest campus football players.

1980 season

Walker, 6 feet 1 inch, 218-pound running back and the most sought after high school soccer player in the country, signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Georgia Bulldogs at Easter Sunday, April 6, 1980.

The season begins with sophomore Carnie Norris starting ahead of Walker in the back as Bulldogs face the University of Tennessee on September 6 in Knoxville. With Tennessee gaining a 9-0 lead at the start of the 2nd quarter, coach Dooley told his offensive coordinator, "I put Herschel in... Do not be afraid to let him carry the ball."

Tennessee held a 15-2 lead at the end of the third quarter when Walker changed the momentum of the game. By the end of the third quarter, Walker scored on a counter from 16 yards outside, where he ran over safety and his future Cowboys Dallas team mates Bill Bates near the goal line. Walker scored again five minutes later with a 9-yard touchdown as Georgia went on to win the game, 16-15.

A week later, Georgia travels to face Texas A & amp; M and Walker finished with 21 bring for 145 yards and 3 goals. The Bulldogs went into a 28-0 lead at half time. With four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Walker stopped a 76-yard touchdown run.

In the next game, Georgia raced into the starting 6-0 by beating Clemson (20-16), TCU (34-3), Ole Miss (28-21), and Vanderbilt (41-0). Walker ran as far as 121 yards against Clemson and 69 against TCU - including a 41-yard run. He missed many Ole Miss games with injuries. In Vandy's match on October 18, Walker had a 23-minute run for a career as high as 283 yards, scoring through a long running touchdown of 60, 48, and 53 yards.

The team and special defense gave Georgia a lead over the two weekend that followed and helped the Bulldogs pass through Kentucky (27-0) and South Carolina (13-10). Victory in Athens, Georgia over Gamecocks on Nov. 1 featured Walker matching the 1980 Heisman Trophy winner, George Rogers. Walker rushed 43 times for 219 yards. Georgia took a 13-0 lead early in the third quarter. Walker's 76-yard Walker trip gave Georgia a lead advantage in 10-0.

Georgia has made it 8-0 when Bulldogs coach Dooley faces the most daunting task of the year. Georgia ranks second to face Florida Gators team 6-1 in Jacksonville on 8 November. Walker committed a Georgia offense, storming 37 times for 238 yards against the Gators. He started everything by taking a sweeping sweep to the right for 72 yards and a score early in the first quarter. Georgia extended its lead to 20-10 at the end of the third quarter when Florida began to bounce back. With time runs out on 3 and 11, QB Buck Belue found WR Lindsay Scott for a touchdown touchdown of 93 yards to give Georgia a 26-21 victory. The game will be called a "Miracle on Duval Street".

Georgia won the SEC Championship on 15 November by taking Auburn down the road, 31-21. Walker did most of the work by rushing 27 times for 84 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown. Two weeks later, Walker ended the regular season with an exclamation point by scoring in a 1, 23, and 65-yard touchdown as Georgia defeated rivals in Georgia Tech state 38-20. Walker rushed 25 times for 205 yards against Ramblin 'Wreck.

The Bulldogs ranked No. 1 in 11-0 as they were invited to play traditional football powers, coach Dan Devine Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-1-1) at Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, La. On January 1, 1981. Walker, who suffered a dislocation of the left shoulder very early in the game, managed to run 36 times for 150 yards, including the longest run of 23 yards. With a 3-3 draw score, Notre Dame failed to bring up the kickoff correctly. Two dramas later, Walker dived over for a 1-yard touchdown run to give the UGA a 10-3 lead. He takes advantage of more Irish misfortune as Notre Dame gropes Georgia set in the 22-yard Irish line. Three dramas later, Walker was in the final zone again to lead 17-3. Georgia survives to win, 17-10.

At the conclusion of the season, Walker helped Georgia Bulldogs complete a 12-0 record as the Associated Press voted University of Georgia No. 1 with 58Ã,½ the first place voting to Pittsburgh 3½. Walker and his colleagues were also voted No. 1 by United Press International Poll - which included Georgia with 36 first-place votes to Pitt's three.

season 1981

The 1980 season momentum continued until September 1981 for Georgia Bulldogs as Walker and the company took over early in the season by scoring early goals and often winning against Tennessee (44-0) and Cal Golden Bears (27-13). Against Volunteers, Walker rushed for 161 yards in 30 brought. Walker crashed into California rushing 35 times for 167 yards on Sept. 12.

After reaching a slump this season, losing 13-3 to Clemson's national champions Georgia re-focus and win to reach 10-1 at the end of the regular season. Although Walker was able to push, push, and cross the Clemson defense by rushing 28 times as far as 111 yards, it was not enough to overcome 9 turnover by the Bulldogs as it lost to the Tigers. Georgia rebounded by vacating South Carolina, 24-0, on Sept. 26 when Walker sophomore ran 176 yards on 36 carry. Georgia led just 3-0 on the half, and Walker opened everything for the Bulldogs in the third quarter by scoring on a walking run of 3 and 8 yards to put the Gamecocks away.

The Bulldog surpassed a solid win - all in October - over Ole Miss (37-7), Vanderbilt (53-21), Kentucky (21-0), and Temple (49-3). Walker rushed for a 265-yard high season on 41 attempts and a touchdown against Ole Miss on Oct. 10. A week later, Walker rushed 39 times for 188 yards and 2 goals against Vanderbilt. Against Temple, he scored four career-high touchdowns while rushing 23 times for 112 yards.

On 7 November, the seventh ranked Georgia and Walker trailed, 14-0 in Jacksonville, to the Florida Gators, but returned to win in last season's scoreline match, 26-21. Walker ran as high as 47 times for 192 yards when scoring four goals.

The Bulldogs completed a regular season at home against their closest rivals: Auburn Tigers (November 14) and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5 December). A 24-13 win over coach Pat Dye's Tigers won another SEC championship. Walker beat up 165 yards on 37 rushing during the contest. In the third quarter, Walker's 2-yard walkdown gave the Bulldogs a commanding 24-7 lead. Against Georgia Tech, Walker finished with 36 rushing for 225 yards and 4 goals in a competition game. The Bulldogs came out to lead 34-0 in the first half. Walker scored three goals in the first half. He added a 1-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter as Georgia drove past the Yellow Jacket, 44-7.

Driving 8 straight wins, Georgia (10-1) was ranked 2nd in the country when they faced Pittsburgh (also 10-1, ranked No. 10) at Sugar Bowl in 1982. The Bulldogs came short in losses, 20-24. Walker finished with 25 rushing for 84 yards and led UGA in a reception with 3 catches for 53 yards. He made his presence felt earlier as he raced 8 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter giving Georgia a 7-0 lead. After 30-yard, Dan Marino's touchdown pass lifted Pitt into a 10-7 lead in the third quarter, Walker replied, scoring from 10 yards to give Georgia a 14-10 lead away into the 4th quarter. With Georgia sticking to a 20-17 lead at the end of the game, Marino found Pittsburgh recipient John Brown to pass a 33-yard touchdown with 0:35 remaining time in the game.

season 1982

With the season opener against defending champions Clemson looming, the Bulldogs received bad news when Walker broke his right thumb in practice on 21 August 1982. He is expected to be out for 3-6 weeks. When the two teams meet on September 6, Walker wore a thick cast on the thumb of his right hand. In this tight game, Walker is used primarily as bait and rushes 11 times over 20 yards. The Georgian defense made for the injured star by closing Clemson, limiting the Tigers to 249 total yard offenses as the Bulldogs won, 13-7.

Georgia next faces a tough test at Brigham Young at home on September 9. Walker, who returned from a thumb injury, rushed 31 times for 124 yards against Cougars. BYU's Steve Young connected with Scott Collie on a 21-yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter to give Brigham Young a 14-7 advantage in the final period. However, Walker collected the Bulldogs as he led them on two scoring drives that gave Georgia a win, 17-14. He scored on a 1-yard touchdown running late to tie the game. Then still, Walker converted on a huge 4-and-1 that allowed Georgia kicker Kevin Butler to make a 44-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the game. The Walker game that won the 40-yard game to keep Butler's kick closed for three minutes, locked up by a 23-yard sprint.

After a tough win against BYU, Walker and the company won to finish the regular season. After passing South Carolina 34-18 on September 25, Georgia rolled during October. Walker's performance against Gamecocks is very simple by default (32 rush, 143 yards, and 1 touchdown), but he runs fast while still using his cast.

In October, Georgia faced the State of Mississippi, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and the State of Memphis. Bulldogs passed Mississippi St., 29-22, when Walker ran 39 times with 215 yards and a touchdown. Furthermore, Georgia overwhelmed Ole Miss, 33-10, when Walker rushed 24 times for 149 yards and 3 goals. On October 16, Georgia made it through Vanderbilt 27-13. Against Commodores, Walker ran as far as 172 yards and a touchdown on 38 brought.

Georgia finished October by beating Kentucky (27-14) and Memphis State (34-3) to push the record for 8-0 going into a Florida game in Jacksonville. Walker maintains a heavy load, rushing 34 times against Kentucky for 152 yards. The Wildcats led 10-3 in the second quarter when Walker ran 64 yards to the paydirt on a screen pass, cutting the deficit to 14-10. Walker finishes with 79 receiving meters on 3 catches. In Georgia's battle with Memphis St., Walker broke the SEC career scoring record as the third-ranked Bulldog swept the tigers with 31 points. He ran for a 219-meter high season in 33 braces and 2 goals, extending a streak of Memphis St's decline to 15 matches.

Georgia took over the violent opposition during November. They made it through Florida, Auburn, and Georgia Tech to complete the perfect 11-0 regular season, and were No. 1 team. 1 in this country. Walker dismantled Florida by scoring three goals as Georgia led 17-0 in the first half. After another Walker Walkdown in the third quarter, UGA led 27-0. He rushed 35 times to 219 yards during this signature win. "We're ready for this game," Walker said. "We're more excited than Florida."

Georgia faces Auburn Tigers on Nov. 13 at Jordan-Hare Stadium in slugfest. Walker scored in a 3-yard touchdown running in the 4th quarter to give the UGA a 19-14 lead. Georgia survived to win and Walker finished with 31 rushing for 177 yards, including a 47 yard run, and 2 goals.

In the last regular season match of Walker's career at the University of Georgia, Yellow Jacket did not fit because Georgia rode to win 38-18. Walker broke five tackles and ran as far as 59 yards to score in the first quarter. Bulldogs scored 17 points in the 3rd quarter which included a 1-yard touchdown run by Walker. He finished with 27 rushing for 162 yards against Rambling Wreck. The victory pitted No.1 No Georgia Bulldogs ranking against No. 2 Penn State Nittany Lions rankings at Sugar Bowl on January 1, 1983.

Walker led the way when Georgia ended their third SEC Championship in many seasons. On December 4, 1982, Walker was awarded the Heisman Cup. She was accompanied to the ceremony by the beloved British University of Georgia Bulldog mascot, Uga IV.

Walker scored one last time in his career at UGA as he fell into the final zone from 1 yard out with 10:37 remaining in the third quarter. That touch put Penn State into third at 20-17. Penn State answered 21 seconds later when quarterback Todd Blackledge completed a 46-yard touchdown to Wideout Gregg Garrity. Penn State won 27-23, and won the national championship unanimously in both AP and UPI polls. Walker ran 28 times over 102 yards and caught a 15-yard bait against PSU's Mark Robinson defense.

Professional career

United States Football League

United States Football League rules (unlike the NFL at the time) allow athletes to become professional after their junior season rather than waiting for their college class to graduate a year later. Furthermore, the rules allow him to choose a playground, enabling him to maximize his support revenues. He stated, "I do not know if I want to play in the NFL except for two New York teams or Dallas Cowboys." Walker signed a contract with General-General of New Jersey in 1983, owned by the oil tycoon Oklahoma J. Walter Duncan, who after the 1983 season sold the team to real estate mogul Donald Trump. Walker only drew one major promotional offer, a project with McDonald's and Adidas.

The USFL has initially followed the NFL and banned underclassmen. However, league officials concluded the rule would never stand in court, and throw it away. To avoid a $ 1.8 million league pay limit, Walker signed a personal service contract with Duncan (later transferred to Donald Trump). Similar arrangements are then made with other college stars. Although this step was challenged in court, Walker and USFL won.

Walker won the USFL rushing title in 1983 and 1985. He set up professional football records for a single yard rush season with 2,411 yards in 1985, averaging 5.50 yards per attempt in 18 games. During his career at USFL, Walker had 5,562 yards rushing in 1,143 carry, averaging 4.87 yards. In 1983, he rushed for 1,812 yards in 18 games. In his second season, his declining thrust dropped to 1,339, but he made it past more than 800 yards, making him over 2,100 yards in total offense.

National Football League

Dallas @ Cowboys (first task)

The Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, suspecting that the United States Football League (USFL) will not survive, won the NFL Walker right by choosing him in the fifth round (overall 114) of the 1985 NFL Draft. The USFL finally surrendered after a technically successful antitrust suit but did not work out against the NFL.

In 1986, he was signed by the Cowboys and moved to fullback, so he could share the backfield task with Tony Dorsett, becoming the second Heisman backfield together in NFL history, after George Rogers and Earl Campbell in collaboration with the 1984 New Orleans Saints. The move creates tension, as it will limit Dorsett's playing time, and since the five-year five-year contract Walker surpassed a $ 4.5 million five-year contract. Walker rushed for the winning goal of the game with a minute to play in a 31-28 victory against the New York Giants in the season opener. In the 15th week of the game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he has a franchise record of 292m total fouls, including the longest NFL of the year with 84-yarder for touchdown and 84-yard touchdown reception.

In 1987, Walker complained with the Cowboys management that he was being moved between three different positions (running back, fullback, wide receiver) and that Dorsett had more carry. He will take over as the first team ran back, playing in 12 games (11 starts), when registering 891 yards rushing, 715 receiving yards, and 8 touchdowns. Dorsett plays in 12 games (6 starts) and has two healthy DNP (Did Not Play), which will make him demand a trade that will send him to the Denver Broncos.

Walker established himself as the main NFL back in 1988, a one-man offense, reaching the peak of his NFL career of 1,514 yards rushing and receiving 505 yards, playing seven positions: halfback, fullback, tight end, H-back, wide receiver, both in the slot and as a flanker. He became the tenth player in NFL history to collect more than 2,000 combined rushing and receiving yards in a single season. In the process he achieved two successive Pro Bowls (1987 and 1988).

In 1989, at the peak of his NFL career, Cowboys traded Walker to Minnesota Vikings with a total of five players (linebacker Jesse Solomon, defensive back Issiac Holt, running back Darrin Nelson, defensive midfielder David Howard, Alex Stewart) and six pick drafts of the future. The five players who are tied to a choice of Minnesota players will give Dallas if a player is cut (which causes Emmitt Smith, Russell Maryland, Kevin Smith and Darren Woodson). It is claimed as a turning point in the Cowboys rise to the upper echelons of the NFL.

Minnesota Vikings

Dubbed the "HWT" (trading Herschel Walker), Walker's trade to Minnesota was originally regarded by many as a Viking supplier with a "missing piece" to run the Super Bowl, however, over time, as the Cowboys fate soars and Vikings' fades, it becomes seen as, perhaps, the most oblique of trades in NFL history. From the moment he arrived in Minneapolis, "Herschel Mania" erupted. After a two and a half hour workout in which he studied only 12 offensive dramas, Walker had a marvelous debut against the Green Bay Packers. He produced the best game with the Viking race since 1983 and the first show that runs more than 100 yards by a Viking since 1987, reached 148 yards on 18 cars.

He received three standing ovations from the 62,075 Metrodome crowd, resulting in a Viking win after four consecutive losses and 14 of his previous 18 games with the Packers. However, production then declines. The problem was that Viking refused to make Walker the center of their offense and Walker could not use the custom-made scheme created by Dallas; which is a force that flows between the tackles of the I-formation with fullback blocking in front of it, to save the Vikings. Instead of seeing their own scheme, the team questioned his talent and commitment to football. He joined the bobsled program from the United States Bobsled and the Skeleton Federation, earning a place at the 1992 Winter Olympics. Scout.com said, "Walker has never been properly used by brain trust coaching." "Herschel the Turkey", an artificial honor awarded by the Star Tribune newspaper for an unknown Minnesota sporting personality, was named for him. Walker played for Viking for two and a half years.

Philadelphia Eagles

After three seasons in Minnesota, Philadelphia Eagles signed Walker in 1992 hoping he will be the last ingredient they need to reach the Super Bowl. That year, he enjoyed his best season as Pro since 1988, rushing for 1,070 yards. In 1994 he became the first NFL player to have a one-time play advantage of 90 or more yards rushing, receiving and kicking back in a single season. He spent three seasons in Philadelphia, leaving after the Eagles signed a free agent Ricky Watters.

Giants New York

The New York Giants signed Walker in 1995 for a three-year contract worth $ 4.8 million as a third return, but soon found that Walker was not difficult enough for the role. He also can not play fullback, due to limited blocking capabilities. Walker led the Giants with 45 kicks back at 21.5 meters per return in 1995, his only season with the team.

Dallas Cowboys (second task)

Walker ended his soccer career with a team that started his NFL career with, Cowboys. In 1996, he rejoined the team as a kickoff return specialist and the third came back down. He also plays fullback, but mainly as a ball-handler instead of the I-Form and pro-set blocker. Walker retired at the end of the 1997 season.

Legacy of football

Walker rushed for 5,562 yards in his USFL career. Combined numbers rushing for USFL and NFL (13,778 yards) will put it 5th all the time on the NFL career rush list. Combined all yard goals for USFL and NFL (25,283 yards) will place it 1st All-Time in the NFL list. In 12 NFL seasons, Walker got 8,225 yards, 4,885 receives yards, and 5,084 kickoff-return yards. for 18,168 total net yard combined, ranked second among all time NFL leaders in total yardage as retirement; at the start of the 2007 NFL season, ten years later, he is still ranked eighth. He scored 84 goals: 61 rushing, 21 receiving and returning two kicks for touchdown. Walker is the only other player besides Derrick Mason who has 10,000 yards more than soccer practice and 5,000 yards back (all in kickoff returns).

Walker is the only player who earns 4,000 yards in three different ways: hurry up, receive, and reproduce. He is one of the few players over 60 hurried touchdowns and 20 goals received. He is the only NFL player with 55 yard, 90 yard run and 90 yard kickoff returns in one season (1994). He is the only player to record 84 yards touchdown run and receipt of an 84-yard touchdown in the same game (December 14, 1986). He has a 100-yard rush and 100 yards receive that day.

Walker is regarded as one of the colleges that runs behind all time. In 1999, he was selected to be the NCAA Football All-Century Football Team Illustrated. At the Sports Sports Net show, Walker was named the best college football that ran all the time and was selected as the third largest player in ESPN college football history. Georgia pulled the Walker number "34".

Although Walker has a successful NFL career, he has never played in the championship team. The move to Minnesota is a turning point in its NFL ownership. In 2008, trading was chosen by SI.com as the worst sports trade of all time. That is the subject of the episode ESPN Classic The Top 5 Reasons You Can not Blame... . In 2003 Johnson County High School named his soccer field in his honor. Walker is a very popular and visible personality, even in his college days, as evidenced by the fact that both race and standard horses are named after him, the first when he was in college. He made several appearances in the Damn Good Dog (2004) sports documentary.

On January 29, 2011, Walker announced that he was considering returning to the NFL. "I've told everyone that at the age of 50 I might try football again to show others I can do that," Walker said. "I want to be George Foreman football, come back and do it again... The two teams I'm going to face are Minnesota or Atlanta. That's probably going to be Atlanta because that's my house." According to Walker, mixed martial arts training made it "a much better athlete now than when I play football and I am in better shape now than when I was in my early 20s, playing soccer."
