William E. Colson and his father, Hugh Colson, founded the Holiday Management Company in Salem, Oregon in 1971. William Colson also serves as President and Managing General Partner for Colson & Holiday Management Company Colson General Contractor, Inc. The company's first community, Kamlu Retirement Inn-Vancouver, opened in Vancouver, Washington on November 1, 1971. The Holiday Management Company added a second community, Edgewood Downs, in Beaverton, Oregon on June 1, 1977.
9 Vacation Retreat communities are exclusive in the western regions of the United States (Washington, Oregon, California, and Idaho). The company first expanded the eastern region by opening Harrison Regent in Ogden, Utah on July 1, 1985. The community was also built in Pueblo, Colorado; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Amarillo, Texas in 1985. Victoria became the first Canadian Retirement Holiday community, which opened on 1 August 1987 in Victoria, British Columbia; However, Holiday Retirement sells the Canadian community in 2014.
The company's name changed to Holiday Retirement in 1987, and it added several communities to its portfolio annually from 1988 to 2009. The company's largest growth occurred in 1998 and 1999 with the addition of 22 properties in each year.
Colson sold his Vacation Pensions in 2007 to Fortress Investment Group LLC of New York. Colson died of colon cancer on May 20, 2007.

Business model
Holiday Pension is widely recognized as the pioneer of the community of independent retirement living. Each community provides a private apartment or cottage for the elderly. The service includes three meals each day, transportation, housekeeping, and activities. Almost all services, facilities, and utilities are combined into month-to-month rental payments.
Unlike nursing homes or life-assisted communities, the independent retired community does not provide skilled care or assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, or taking medication. However, residents of Holiday Retirement may use health care services outside the home to meet additional needs. The Holiday Pension Apartments also include an emergency tug line that informs managers of emergency situations.
One of the hallmarks of the Pension Holidays is the exclusive travel program. Residents and employees can book guest apartments on virtually all other Vacation Retirement properties for free. Guest suites can be booked for up to seven days. Food service, transportation, and almost all other services are included at no additional cost.
Philanthropy, veteran initiative
Holiday Retirement develops an Elderly and Elderly Waiter program, which coordinates volunteer opportunities for citizens. This program was awarded in 2007 by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA).
Holiday Retirement has organized various national fundraising initiatives, including donating $ 82,500 to the American Cancer Society during the 2010 Move for a Cure campaign and $ 1.2 million for the Outward Bound for Veterans program in 2011, 2013 and 2014.
Residents support a variety of local drives and fundraisers, including Toys for Tots, Buddy Bear Programs, American Red Cross, Humane Society, local food banks, schools, police and fire, senior centers, and veterans-related causes.
