National Medical Challenge Bowl is a competition coordinated by Max Yakimov from the Academy of Student Academy of American Physician Assistant.

The competition is held during the AAPA Annual PA Conference and the event is organized in the style of a medical quiz bowl. Forty-eight teams, with three PA students to the team, compete to answer medical-related questions. Questions were asked on various subjects including physical diagnosis, microbiology, anatomy, OB/GYN, lung, cardiology, primary care, emergency medicine, and surgery. Only AAPA student members are currently enrolled in an accredited Physician Assistant program that has a registered student community eligible to participate.

Histori

The Bowl Challenge begins at the 1991 Annual Conference of AAPA in San Francisco, CA. It has been held as an annual event at the conference every year since then. Some countries have followed this tradition and held annual state competitions that are printed after the same format as the national competition. Competition is one of the most anticipated events at each Annual Conference. Several students from various participating schools frequently attend the event and are also very popular among the Conference participants as they cheer for their alma mater.

Competition Formats and Rules

The team plays in a round-robin format; with a preliminary round, a semi-final round and one final round The moderator reads the question, the first team being buzzed is recognized by the moderator and allowed 10 seconds to answer.

Moderators do not solve questions if teams are buzzing before full questions are read.
If the team answers incorrectly, the moderator rereads the question and then allows other teams to get a chance to respond. Ten seconds is allowed for the response and only one response per team is received after the team buzzed.

The team with the most points at the end of the round advanced to the next round. The team with the most points at the end of the final round is declared the winner. If there is a match between the two teams with the highest score in the round, the playoff "sudden death" is held and the team to answer the question correctly wins the round. If the team answers wrongly, the other team wins.

Ten points are given for each question that is answered correctly. Ten points are reduced for every wrong response. If a team wriggles and then fails to answer, it is counted as the wrong response.
Team members must speak clearly and clearly in the microphone. If the moderator questions the pronunciation of an answer, they can ask the team to spell the word in question. If the spelling is correct, points are given. If the pronunciation and spelling are wrong, the points are reduced.
