The Office Assistant is a smart user interface for Microsoft Office that helps users by way of interactive animated characters, linked to Office help content. It is included in Microsoft Office for Windows (versions 97 to 2003), in Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Projects (98 to 2003 versions), and Microsoft Office for Mac (98 to 2004 versions).
The default assistant in an English version of Windows called Clippit (usually dubbed Clippy ), after a paper clip. The character is designed by Kevan J. Atteberry. Clippit is the default and by far the most important Assistant (in part because in most cases the setup CD is required to install another assistant), which also causes it to be called only Microsoft Paperclip . The original Clippit in Office 97 was given a new look in Office 2000.
This feature attracts strong negative responses from many users. Microsoft turned off the feature by default in Office XP, recognizing its unpopularity in Clippy campaign ad spoofing. The feature was deleted altogether in Office 2007 and Office 2008 for Mac, as it continues to attract criticism even from Microsoft employees.
Clippit's standard assistants have been heavily mocked in popular culture, parodied, appearing in memes, and even mocked by Microsoft itself from 2001 onwards.

When desktop compositing with Aero glass is enabled in Windows Vista or 7, or when running on Windows 8 or later, the normally transparent space around the Office Assistant becomes pink, blue, or green solid.

Criticism and parody
The program is widely reviled among users as annoying and annoying, and is criticized even inside Microsoft.
