Irish workers workers , such as animal nurses, assist veterinarians, or carry out animal health procedures independently. Workers in Ireland have been represented by the Irish Animal Care Association (IVNA) since 2002, and were previously represented by the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) from the 1960s. The title "animal nurse" can only be used by those enrolled in the Irish Veterinary Council. The nominal heading used in Ireland is RVN (Registered Veterinary Nurse).

Veterinary care

Animal care has become a regulated profession in Ireland since January 2008, under the 2005 Veterinary Practice Act. When the action was implemented in January 2008, unqualified staff working in veterinary practice prior to 2004 had a six-month period to apply for registration while those who confer the same rights and responsibilities as full membership. The temporary registration category expires on 31 December 2012.

After the adoption of the Veterinary Practice Act in January 2008, no individual may perform veterinary nursing obligations unless registered on the Register or currently undergoing a formal education course approved by the Veterinary Council.

Registered animal nurses must complete the required amount of continuing professional education each year to maintain their enrollment.

A survey of 2016 found that the vast majority of registered veterinary nurses were women, and the average age was 32 years.

Qualification

There are five eligible courses to become an animal nurse in Ireland, each approved by the Irish Veterinary Council: a 2-year diploma course in St. Louis. John's Central College in Cork, a three-year Bachelor of Science degree in Athlone, Dundalk and Letterkenny Institutes of Technology and a 4-year higher (Bachelor of Science) degree at University College Dublin. Qualifications obtained outside of Ireland may be recognized by the Veterinary Council as equivalent to Irish veterinary veterinary qualifications.
