Histori
Providence Health System was founded by Sisters of Providence (Montreal, Quebec), a community of Roman Catholic nuns founded in Montreal, Quebec by Mother ÃÆ'â ⬠° milie Gamelin in 1843. In 1856, Mother Joseph and four sisters came to Vancouver, Washington (then the Territory of Washington) to serve the indigenous population and settlers. The five pioneering sisters crossed the Northwest and set up schools, hospitals, orphanages and other care establishments. In 1858, they founded the St. Joseph, the first permanent hospital in the Pacific Northwest (now PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center). In 1859, the sisters merged their work, creating a network of health care services known as Providence Health & amp; Services. The sisters then set up schools and hospitals in Washington, Montana, Oregon, Alaska, British Columbia and California.
Providence's Health System was managed by the Sisters of Providence until 1979, when the first person outside the church was made a president of the system because of the declining number in the religious community.
Providence Health & amp; Service is the largest health care system in Washington state and one of the largest state companies in the state. Providence Health System is one of the oldest companies in the state. It's headquartered in Renton, Washington.
Affiliation with Swedish Health Services and Pacific Medical Centers
In 2012, Providence obtained Swedish Health Services in Seattle, Washington. Public mergers have been communicated as affiliates developed from a shared desire to more efficiently expand services to patients in Snohomish and King districts. Interestingly, these two institutions are known as highly competitive competitors that make these affiliates shock the majority of the population in their respective communities. The Swedish Medical Center was in serious financial difficulty following an aggressive expansion strategy started on the eve of the 2008 financial crisis and the major cuts made for Medicare replacement in 2009. Fate has a similar struggle but is able to rely on the massive cash reserves held by Providence Health. & amp; Services.
Dr. Rod Hochman, CEO of the Swedish Medical Center employed by Providence Health & amp; Service when Providence affiliated with Sweden in 2012. Effective April 2013, Dr. Hochman became president and CEO of Providence.
By 2014, Providence enters a "secular affiliation" similar to Pacific Medical Centers (PacMed). PacMed joined Sweden as part of the Western HealthConnect Providence division.
Community Benefits
In 2011, Providence provided over $ 651 million in community benefits, including nearly $ 204 million in free care and a discount for those unable to pay for treatment.
Sponsor
In 2014, Providence signed a sponsorship deal with Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer giving them the naming rights to the Timbers stadium, now known as Providence Park. Providence has not disclosed the amount of fees paid.
Environmental Initiatives
The company has a program designed to reduce the amount of food delivered to landfills. The program focuses on more accurate purchasing practices and food preparation, composting food waste and donating edible food to scavengers and similar nonprofit organizations. Providence requires a chef throughout his system to use centrally developed recipes and portion sizes designed to reduce waste and increase the nutritional value of the food served. In 2016, the company said its program helped divert 204 tons of food waste from landfill.

Providence Medical Group
Providence Medical Group operates more than 250 neighborhood clinics across Alaska, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Providence Medical Group is part of Providence Health & amp; Services.
Providence Medical Group employs more than 1,600 doctors offering expertise in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, dermatology and other specialties. Since officially became part of Providence Health & amp; Services, Providence Medical Group has experienced rapid expansion as hospitals seek to improve control of physician referral patterns. This is especially true in specializations involved in performing highly-reimbursed procedures such as Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Orthopedics. For nearly 150 years the hospital medical staff consisted of independent community physicians, but this has shifted due to the majority of medical staff and almost all staff leaders employed directly by Providence. This reflects the increasing trend seen across the country as a hospital jockey for market share in an environment with a rapid and uncertain central replacement replacement model.
Other services
Providence Health & amp; Services provide outpatient services, transitional care, home care and home care, substance abuse programs, mental health care, prevention and health programs, long-term care, and assisted living and housing. Providence's Health Plan provides or manages health coverage for more than 375,000 members nationwide.
