The Patrick Heart Institute of St Francis

The Patrick Heart Institute of St. Francis is the source for the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with heart problems. Cardiologists and surgeons provide total cardiovascular care, from the most advanced diagnostic procedures and the only open heart open surgery program in the area for cardiac catheterization, balloon angioplasty and innovative rehabilitation programs. St Francis is the region's first hospital to perform open heart surgery, balloon angioplasty, and an automatic defibrillator network implant.

Cardiac Diagnostics

The Institute uses the latest diagnostic procedures to provide accurate analysis to determine treatment for patients with cardiovascular disease. These procedures range from non-invasive tests, such as electrocardiogram (EKG), electrophysiological tests (EP), stress tests, nuclear cardiolit studies, echo-cardiograms and Doppler flow studies, for more complex and sophisticated tests, such as coronary angiograms. Many of these tests can be performed on outpatients. They serve as useful tools for evaluating vascular and cardiac abnormalities or as a means to produce images of heart muscle and valves. In addition, the cardiologist at St. Francis has performed more than 15,000 cardiac catheters in the most advanced and comprehensive heart diagnostic laboratory in the greater Columbus area.

Heart Interventions

Once heart problems are accurately diagnosed, The Patrick Heart Institute of St Francis - along with patient doctors - can provide the right treatment through a number of valuable methods. For some patients, interventions such as coronary angioplasty or atherectomy may serve as a viable alternative to surgery. Patients who choose to have angioplasty and atherectomy are usually discarded 24-48 hours after the procedure and, in many cases, resume full day-to-day activities.

Heart Rehabilitation Program

Heart Rehabilitation Program at St. Hospital Francis is especially designed for patients who have experienced: heart attack, heart surgery, cardiac angioplasty or stent, or high risk for heart disease. It is important to understand that anyone who has experienced this experience may be worried about exercising. Rehab staff monitor all exercises and assist patients in the development of their respective training programs. The goal of this program is to help each patient return to an active and productive lifestyle. The gym has indoor tracks, treadmills, exercise bikes, rowing machines and sports equipment designed to enhance the strength of patients along with physical fitness.

Emergency Department

Emergency Department of St. Helena Hospital Francis is equipped with doctors and nurses who have been specially trained in emergency medicine. St. Francis boasts of her dedication to providing a variety of cardiovascular treatments. As a result, the hospital has two specially equipped cardiovascular treatment rooms. In typical cardiac emergencies, thrombolytic drugs may be used occasionally to dissolve blood clots and as a useful method to reduce further damage to the patient's heart. This is a front line defense against arrhythmias and heart attacks, and thus, should be administered at least within the first six hours of a heart attack to be effective.

St. Emergency Department Francis is relatively new. Patient safety is a mainstay at the very front of the design and planning process. This sophisticated Emergency Area provides large, well-lit rooms that are specifically positioned so that any change in the patient's condition, light or critical, can be judged easily and quickly. Registration of beds increases the ability of medical personnel to respond quickly so that care is not delayed. The hospital also uses a pneumatic tube system as a means to send laboratory specimens for faster results. Finally, a tactical action aimed at reducing the number of time-consuming documents is a computerized PIXIS system that keeps supplies and medicines available.

ED FastTrack The St. Francis FastTrack Emergency areas serve patients with less urgent emergencies, including but not limited to things like twisted ankles and headaches. The capabilities offered by having a separate Fast Track help to ensure that these patients will not have to wait for the waiting time behind the patient who has a life-threatening emergency; average waiting time is about 90 minutes. In 2003, St. Francis doubled the number of bedtime FastTrack after the Emergency Department had just finished.

Elena Diaz-Verson Amos Center for Breast Health at St. Francis

Breast cancer is usually treated using a combination of local therapy as well as systemic therapy. The goal of local therapy is to destroy cancer cells present in the breast as well as associated lymph nodes, which helps minimize the risk of recurrence. Systemic therapy involves destroying tumor cells that may have been diluted into the circulation while at the same time minimizing the risks associated with developing sites that are far from the potential for tumor growth. In 2008, St. Francis became the first facility in Georgia that offers Special Breast Gamma imaging for difficult diagnosis of breast abnormalities.
