History

The Guest House was built in 1943. A wood-framed building, similar to many other World War II period "H-Plan" buildings, serves as a residence for a number of officials during the secret Manhattan Project, including Enrico Fermi, Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves. In 1949, an additional 44 rooms were completed. The name was changed to Alexander Inn in September 1950. The hotel was sold by the government to Mr. W. W. Faw for $ 34,000 in 1958. At that time, a private bathroom and a ballroom were added, and the kitchen expanded.

The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993 as a property contributing to the Oak Ridge Historic District.

The Alexander Inn ceased operating as a hotel in the mid-1990s. From then on the building fell into serious collapse. On December 18, 2009, the Oak Ridge Revitalization Effort, a local nonprofit organization, announced that they had purchased the historic property. In March 2010, the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance listed the inn at the top of the first East Endangered Heritage list of endangered historic buildings and sites in the 16-county area of East Tennessee. Previously, an interest-free mortgage of $ 353,700 ended on 30 June 2011, after which the property was returned to the previous owner. The Oak Ridge Heritage Association (ORHPA), a group that cares to protect the history of the city, they started working with ORRE to develop a new nonprofit organization that will focus entirely on Restoration Inn.

Alexander is temporarily on an endangered list by the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance. The Oak Ridge Industrial Development Council was passed, and Oak Ridge City Council approved, 90 percent, 10 years of tax breaks for the project to convert a hotel into a Senior Living by a private developer.

In November 2015 the building reopened as a senior living center, after a $ 8 million renovation through Dover Development. The facility offers memory care and help-assisted housing.
