An anesthesia technician (English English) or anesthesia technician (US English) is an allied health care worker who assists in the administration and monitoring of anesthesia and has extensive knowledge of anesthesia techniques. , instruments, inventories, and technology.
Anesthesia technicians are primarily employed by the anesthesia department or operating room suite, but can be found in other areas of clinical practice including emergency department, intensive care unit (ICU) and day surgery clinic.

Anesthesia technicians are involved with all aspects of delivery of patient anesthesia treatments, taking into account the religious and cultural beliefs of patients and respecting their right to medical privacy and dignity at all times. Anesthesia technicians also provide a key role in emergency patient resuscitation.
Before anesthesia
The anesthesia technician prepares the equipment needed for the patient to undergo anesthesia safely. This involves:
- check and set the anesthesia machine
- setting up an intravenous drug
- preparing intravenous therapy administration equipment
- prepares various devices to maintain the patient's airway (eg, laryngeal mask, endotracheal tube)
- communicate with the patient when they arrive at the operating room
- create peripheral intravenous access.
- apply anesthesia monitoring to help assess the condition of the patient while under anesthesia. These may include electrocardiography (ECG), blood pressure and oxygen saturation devices. Monitoring of other parameters such as anesthetic depth monitor (EEG, bispectal index, etc.) may also be required.
During anesthesia
The role of anesthesia technician includes assisting with:
- induce and maintain adequate anesthesia.
- build and secure the airway.
- ensure that the patient is positioned in such a way as to NOT cause discomfort or injury during their procedure.
- monitor and maintain the vital signs and depth of patient anesthesia.
- monitoring and temperature setting.
- collection and analysis of patient samples (blood).
- acquire and manage fluid and transfusion equipment.
After anesthesia
Anesthesia technicians assist anesthesiologist with:
- awaken the patient.
- remove airway device.
- transfer the patient to the post-operative care unit
Other activities
Regional variations exist, but anesthetic technicians may also be involved with:
- Intraoperative intra-aortic balloon pump setup, operation and monitoring.
- Insertion and monitoring of Swan-Ganz pulmonary artery catheter.
- Intra-operation blood rescue, operation and monitoring.
- Arterial blood gas analysis, including maintenance of analysis tools.
- Insertion and monitoring of arterial channels.
- Installation of IV peripheral lines.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

Anesthesia technicians work as members of multi-disciplinary teams that include doctors, nurses and support workers. The New Zealand Anesthetic Technicians Society is a body that provides education and support for Anesthesia Technicians.
Registration
Anesthetic technicians are now covered by the 2003 Competence Health Insurance Competency Act. New Zealand's anesthesia assistants must now be registered by law with New Zealand Medical Board (formerly Medical Laboratory Science Council).
To practice, members must obtain the Certificate of Annual Practice from the Medical Sciences Council.
Qualification
In New Zealand, the Diploma of Applied Science is a national qualification. It was studied for via Auckland University of Technology. Other qualifications (international) may also be accepted to work as an Anesthesia Technician in New Zealand.

Registration
Anesthetic technicians in Australia are granted voluntary registration from their National Agency, Australian Anesthesia Allied Health Practitioners AAAHP (www.aaahp.org.au). In Western Australia, the Association of Operating Theater Practitioners (WA) (AOTP) is a professional community for anesthesia technicians in Western Australia. AAAHP is currently working with the Australian government to introduce Mandatory Regulations. The minimum requirement for Voluntary Registration is the completion of a nationally recognized or nationally recognized Diploma of Paramedical Science (Anesthesiology) and several hospitals in Victoria Certificate IV in Anesthesia Technology. In the United States, the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists & amp; Technicians ( ASATT ), recognize the scope of practice for anesthesia technical personnel. ASATT's commitment is to ensure that efficient, safe, competent, and ethical practices are provided to the community and maintain professional practice standards. ASATT recognizes that anesthesia technical personnel are part of the anesthesia care team as set out in the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA ) practice guidelines.
