Pet Residence Halls has emerged as a number of universities and universities in the United States, including Northern Colorado University, Eckerd College, Stephens College, Stetson University, and Washington & amp; Jefferson College. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the State University of New York at Canton allow cats in certain dormitories. Sweet Briar College allows riding students to bring their horses to campus. Case Western Reserve University allows caged animals, such as rabbits or hamsters, and allows "mascot" dogs in fraternal and dormitory homes. Lehigh University also permits dogs "mascots" at fraternal homes and dormitories. Principia College allows pets that can be kept in a cage or tank. The University of Notre Dame allows fish tanks.

In 2008, USA Today estimated that at least 12 colleges and universities allow some form of pet-friendly living arrangements. Students at other institutions have advocated animal-friendly housing policies. A Kaplan Test Preparation survey from 2011 found that 38% of colleges and universities in the United States have student housing where pets are allowed.
