History
The School of Our Lady of the Assumption in Morristown, New Jersey, founded by Reverend Bernard McQuid in 1850, was a pioneer of the Bayley-Ellard school. A parochial grammar school, it was expanded and renamed the Bayley School in 1880 in honor of Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley. A two-year business course was added to the grammar school curriculum circa 1900.
Msgr. Edward Ellard introduced a four-year curriculum in 1920, making Bayley a Catholic junior high school in the area. In 1948, Margaret and Susan Hawes left $ 100,000 for the purchase of a new school building that would be named in honor of Mgr. Ellard. The Walker Estate 40-acre (160,000 m 2 ) in Madison was purchased. The doors of Bayley-Ellard High School opened in September 1949, making Bayley the junior high school of the Catholic diocese in Paterson diocese. The school is run by the Sisters of Charity, the Sisters of Christian Charity, and the Dominican Sisters.
Announced that the school will close at the end of the 2004-05 school year in May 2005.

The school is located in the former Walker Estate. The original building includes a house of Colonial Revival, conservatory and carriage house. Bishop's Hall, a gymnasium-class complex, was added in 1967, and a new sports complex consisting of soccer fields, lacrosse, baseball and softball was completed later. The carriage house was demolished in 2003 and a life-assisted care facility was built around the same location shortly afterwards. Borough of Madison bought a sports field four years after school closing. The conservatory was demolished in about 2009, as part of the conversion of this site to Paterson's Diocese Evangelization Center "St. Paul Inside the Walls".
