CarPlay is Apple's standard that allows car radio or head unit to screen and also acts as a controller for the iPhone. It is available on all iPhone 5 and newer models with at least iOS 7.1.

Most vehicle manufacturers around the world say they will incorporate CarPlay into their infotainment system from time to time. CarPlay can also be plugged into most vehicles with aftermarket vehicle audio hardware.

According to Apple's website, all major vehicle manufacturers are partnering with CarPlay.

Software

CarPlay provides access to Apple apps like Phone, Music, Apple Maps, iMessage, iBooks, and Podcasts, and third-party apps like iHeartRadio, Radioplayer, Spotify, CBS Radio, Rdio, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Google Play Music, Clammr, NPR One , Audiobooks.com, and Audible. Developers must apply to Apple to obtain rights to develop applications that support CarPlay.

CarPlay also extends Siri support, using voice dictation and feedback as the primary means of input for text messages, or telling comprehensive weather and stock reports rather than showing weather charts. Siri blocks certain voice commands such as displaying web search results when CarPlay is in use.

Hardware

While most CarPlay software runs on a connected iPhone, the CarPlay interface provides audio and display connectivity to the car infotainment system. Depending on the car maker's implementation, CarPlay is controlled via a touch screen, rotary cursor, trackpad, or buttons on the instrument cluster and steering wheel.

CarPlay is also supported on head unit heads of special classes or as dongle attachments to other tablet computers.

History

predecessor

The concept of CarPlay (and later Android Auto) is based on Apple's feature known iOS 4 (and used) called "iPod Out" which is the result of joint development between BMW Group's Technology Office USA in Palo Alto, California, and Apple Inc. As a result of years of exploration cooperation, iPod Out allows vehicles with the necessary infrastructure to "host" analog and audio video from iOS devices that support inputs, such as keystrokes and rotation knobs of car infotainment. system, to drive a "hosted" user interface on the vehicle's internal display. The iOS feature was first announced during WWDC in 2010 and was first delivered as an infrastructure implemented in BMW Group vehicles beginning in early 2011. The BMW and Mini option is called "PlugIn" and paved the way for the first cross-OEM platform, introducing the concept of requiring a special car interface for app (as opposed to a simple mirrorLink and does not quite reflect what is shown on the smartphone screen).

Development

During the development of his codename was Stark. Eddy Cue from Apple announced it as iOS in the Car at WWDC 2013. In January 2014 it was reported that Apple's hardware-oriented enterprise culture has led to delayed releases. CarPlay was launched under the current brand at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014 with Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo among the first car manufacturers.

MirrorLink is the standard for car-smartphone connectivity, which is currently implemented in vehicles by Honda, Volkswagen, SEAT, Buick, Skoda, Mercedes-Benz, Citro, and Smart by phone by many manufacturers including Sony, Samsung and HTC.

Some vehicle manufacturers have their own systems to synchronize cars with smartphones, for example: BMW Assist, Hyundai Blue Link, iLane, MyFord Touch, Ford SYNC, OnStar, and Toyota Entune.

General Motors has released APIs to enable the development of applications that interact with vehicle software systems.
