Cortana is a virtual assistant created by Microsoft for Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, Windows Phone 8.1, Enable smart speakers, Microsoft Band, Xbox One, iOS, Android, Windows Mixed Reality, and Amazon Alexa immediately.
Cortana can set reminders, recognize natural sounds without requirements for keyboard input, and answer questions using information from Bing search engine.
Cortana is currently available in English, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese editions, depending on the software platform and the region in which it is used. Cortana mainly competes with assistants like Apple Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa, Samsung Bixby.

Histori
Cortana was demonstrated for the first time at the Microsoft BUILD Developer Conference (April 2-4, 2013) in San Francisco. It has been launched as a key ingredient of Microsoft's "makeover" from future operating systems for Windows Phone and Windows.
It's named Cortana, a synthetic intelligence character in the Hello video game franchise that comes from Bungie folklore, with Jen Taylor, the character's voice actress, re-voicing a special US version of personal assistant.
Development
Cortana's development began in 2009 on Microsoft's Speech product team with general manager Zig Serafin and Chief Scientist Larry Heck. Heck and Serafin set out a vision, mission, and long-term plan for Microsoft's personal digital assistants and they built a team with the expertise to create an initial prototype for Cortana. To develop Cortana's digital assistant, the team interviewed a personal human assistant. This interview inspired a number of unique features in Cortana, including the feature "notebook" assistant. Initially Cortana was only meant to be a codename, but the petition on the proven popular Windows Phone UserVoice site made the code name official.
Expansion to another platform
In January 2015, Microsoft announced the availability of Cortana for Windows 10 desktop and mobile devices as part of the incorporation of Windows Phone into the operating system in general.
On May 26, 2015, Microsoft announced that Cortana will also be available on other mobile platforms. Android release is set for July 2015, but the Android APK file containing Cortana leaks before release. Officially released, along with iOS version, in December 2015.
During E3 2015, Microsoft announced that Cortana will come to Xbox One as part of a universally-designed Windows 10 update to the console.

Cortana in other services
Microsoft has integrated Cortana into many products such as Microsoft Edge, a browser bundled with Windows 10. Microsoft's Cortana assistant is highly integrated into Edge's browser. Cortana can find opening hours when on a restaurant site, showing a retail coupon for a website, or displaying weather information in the address bar. At the 2015 Worldwide Partner Conference Microsoft demonstrates Cortana integration with upcoming products like GigJam. Instead, Microsoft announced in late April 2016 that Microsoft would block anything other than Bing and Edge from being used to complete the Cortana search, once again raising questions of anticompetitive behavior by the company.
Microsoft "Windows in car" concept includes Cortana. This concept allows the driver to make restaurant reservations and see places before they go there.
In Microsoft Build 2016, Microsoft announced plans to integrate Cortana into Skype (Microsoft's instant messaging service) as a bot to allow users to order food, book trips, transcribe video messages and make calendar appointments via Cortana and other bots. In 2016, Cortana can underline certain words and phrases in Skype conversations that are related to contacts and companies. A writer from Engadget has criticized Cortana integration on Skype for only responding to very specific keywords, feeling as if he "chatted with search engines" because of the way non-personal bots answered certain words like "Hello" to the Bing Music bot bringing Adele's song to that name.
Microsoft also announced in Microsoft Build 2016 that Cortana will be able to sync cloud between Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10's Action Center, as well as notifications from Android devices.
In December 2016, Microsoft announced a preview of Calendar.help, a service that allows people to delegate scheduling meetings to Cortana. The user interacts with Cortana by entering him in an email conversation. Cortana will then check the availability of people in Outlook Calendar or Google Calendar, and work with others who are given Cc in emails to schedule meetings. Services rely on automation and human-based computing.
In May 2017, Microsoft teamed up with Harman Kardon to announce INVOKE, a voice-activated speaker featuring Cortana. The premium speaker has a cylinder design and offers 360-degree sound, the ability to make and receive calls with Skype, and all other features available today with Cortana.
Function
Cortana can set reminders, recognize natural sounds without requirements for keyboard input, and answer questions using information from Bing search engines (eg current weather and traffic conditions, sports scores, biographies). Search using Windows 10 will only be done with the Microsoft Bing search engine and all links will open with Microsoft Edge, except when a screen reader like Narrator is being used, where the link will open in Internet Explorer. The integrated Windows Bing SmartSearch Windows 8.1 feature is incorporated into Cortana, which replaces previous Bing Search apps that are enabled when the user presses the "Search" button on their device. Cortana includes music recognition services. Cortana can simulate rolling dice and flip coins. "Cortana's" Concert Watch "monitors Bing's search to determine which band or musicians the user is interested in. It integrates with Microsoft Band clock bands for Windows Phone devices when connected via Bluetooth, it can make phone alerts and notifications.
Since the series of Lumia Denim mobile phones launched in October 2014, active hearing is added to Cortana, enabling it to be summoned with the phrase: "Hey Cortana"; then can be controlled as usual. Some devices from the United Kingdom by O2 have received Lumia Denim updates without features but these are later clarified as bugs and Microsoft has fixed them.
Cortana is integrated with services like Foursquare to provide restaurant recommendations and local attractions and LIFX recommendations to control the light bulb.
Notebook
Cortana stores personal information such as interests, location data, reminders, and contacts in "Notebook". It can take advantage of and add this data to learn about user-specific patterns and behaviors. Users can view and determine what information is collected to allow for control over privacy, said to be "level of control beyond the comparable assistant". Users can delete information from "Notebook".
Reminder
Cortana has a built-in reminder system that for example can be tied to a special contact; will then alert the user when communicating with the contact, perhaps at a certain time or when the phone is in a certain location. Originally this reminder is specific to Cortana installed devices, but because Windows 10 Microsoft syncs reminders across devices.
Design
Most Cortana versions take the form of two nested animated circles, which are animated to show activities such as searching or speaking. The main color schemes include black or white backgrounds and blue shades for each circle.
Phone notification sync
Cortana on Windows Mobile and Android is able to capture device notifications and send them to Windows 10. It allows computer users to view notifications from their phones in Windows 10 Action Center. This feature was announced in early 2016 and released later this year.
Miscellaneous
Cortana has a "do-disturb" mode where users can specify "quiet hours", as is available for Windows Phone 8.1 users. Users can change the settings so that Cortana calls users by their name or nickname. It also has the "Easter Eggs" library, a predetermined statement.
When asked for predictions, Cortana correctly predicted the winner of the first 14 games of the 2014 FIFA World Cup football fall phase, including the semi-finals, before falsely picking Brazil over the Netherlands in place of the third play-off match; This streak defeats Paul the Octopus who correctly predicts all 7 FIFA World Cup 2010 matches in Germany as well as Final. Cortana can predict results in various other sports such as NBA, NFL, Super Bowl, ICC Cricket World Cup, and various European football leagues. Cortana can solve mathematical equations, convert measurement units, and determine exchange rates between currencies including Bitcoin.
Integration
Cortana can integrate with third-party applications in Windows 10 or directly through the service. Starting in late 2016, Cortana integrates with the Microsoft Wunderlist service, enabling Cortana to add and act on reminders.
Skill
At the Build 2017 conference, Microsoft announced that Cortana would gain third-party skill capabilities, similar to those in Amazon Alexa.
On February 16, 2018 Microsoft announced linked home skills added to ecobee, Honeywell Lyric, Total Connect Comfort Honeywell, LIFX, TP-Link Kasa, and Geeni. Also support for IFTTT is also added.
Privacy issues
Cortana indexes and stores user information. It can be disabled; this will cause a Windows search to search the Web as well as the local computer, but this can be turned off. Turning off Cortana does not by itself erase user data stored on Microsoft servers, but can be removed by user actions. Microsoft has been further criticized for a request to the Bing website for a file called "threshold.appcache" which contains Cortana information through searches made through the Start Menu even when Cortana is disabled in Windows 10.
As of April 2014, Cortana is disabled for users under the age of 13.
Territories and languages ââ
The English version of Cortana speaks with a British accent and uses the English idiom, while the Chinese version, known as Xiao Na, is Chinese Mandarin and has icons featuring faces and two eyes, which are not used in other areas.
In 2016 the English version of Cortana on Windows devices is available to all users in the United States (United Kingdom), Canada (France/Great Britain), Australia, New Zealand, India and UK (UK England). Other language versions of Cortana are available in China (Simplified Chinese), Japanese (Japanese), French (French), German (German), Italian (Italian), Brazil (Portuguese), Mexican, and Spanish (Spanish). Cortana for Android and iOS is also available in the same language. Although Cortana generally hears the word "Hey Cortana", certain languages ââuse customized versions (eg "Hola Cortana" for Spanish).
The English version (English) localized by Cortana is voiced by Ginnie Watson, an actress, singer/songwriter and Anglo-French voice artist.
The local version of Cortana is voiced by Jen Taylor, the voice actress who voiced Cortana, a virtual assistant name, in the Halo video game series.
This table identifies the local version of Cortana that is currently available. Unless indicated, this applies to both Windows Mobile and Windows 10 versions of the assistant.
Technology
Cortana's natural language processing capability comes from Tellme Networks (purchased by Microsoft in 2007) and combined with a Semantic search database called Satori.
Update
The Cortana update is delivered separately from them to the main Windows Phone OS, which allows Microsoft to provide new features faster. Not all Cortana related features can be updated in this way because some features like "Hey Cortana" require Windows Phone update service and Qualcomm's Snapdragon SensorCore Technology.
