Fruitvale (originally Fruit Vale and formerly Brays ) is an environment in Oakland, California, USA. Located about 4 miles (6.44 km) southeast of Downtown, and home to the largest Hispanic population in the city, with Hispanics representing 53.8% of the Fruitvale population. The Fruitvale ZIP Code is 94601. It lies at a height of 49 feet (15 m).

This area is named by Henderson Luelling, in honor of many orchards (mostly apricots and cherries) that dominated the area at the end of the 19th century. After the earthquake of 1906, the onslaught of refugees from San Francisco led to a population explosion, and an unrelated environment was annexed to Oakland City in 1909.

The Fruitvale shopping district is located along International Blvd. (formerly East 14th Street to 1995), from Fruitvale Avenue to 38th Avenue, and is one of the city's major commercial areas. This area is home to many Latin businesses and hosts several annual cultural events, including the Cinco de Mayo parade and the DÃÆ'a De Los Muertos festival. Prior to the 1970s, the area had a distribution center and Montgomery Wards West Coast shopping center located in downtown Oakland, roughly across East Oakland Hospital, both on East 14th Street. On the San Leandro side, in the south, is the Fruitvale Theater. In between, about 35th Avenue and E 14th St., is Foodvale Market, a two-story department store, post office, and a host of other businesses. St. Catholic Church Elizabeth and St. Elizabeth High School are both located one block north of International Blvd.

History

During and after World War II, a large number of African and Latino Americans migrated to Oakland, and located in the old part of town, West Oakland. This was followed by "urban renewal" and the construction of Nimitz Freeway, which bulldozed much of West Oakland. Then there was the population movement that was taken to East Oakland. Fruitvale is in the middle of East Oakland, as it is home to many African and Latino Americans, who in 1990 formed the majority of the districts. It was not until the late 1980s that the larger Fruitvale District began to attract more of the Latin population. African Americans have moved to areas outside of East Oakland to the south of Fruitvale or moved out of town entirely to the suburbs of the Bay Area. Fruitvale is dominated by Latino, and is a cultural landmark for Latino townspeople.

In the late 1960s and early 70s, the lower half of the Fruitvale district was bypassed by Chicanos and Latinos. The Chicano movement that occurred at that time throughout the Southwest also spread to the Fruitvale district. After the 1968 assassination of Charles Pinky De Read by the Oakland Police Department, the public began to organize against police brutality. One of the first organizations is Latinos United for Justice. Many other militant and non-militant Chicano groups were formed. The Brown Baret has a chapter in Oakland, and the Chicano Revolutionary Party is another Chicano militant organization. The Chicano Revolutionary Party has a free breakfast program that the Black Panthers have helped them create in Jingletown; they also patrol the streets of Fruitvale and help defend it against police brutality. La Raza Unida Party also has a chapter in Oakland. Clinica de la Raza was created for the actions of the Chicano Movement as a need for free clinics for the Chicano and Latin communities in East Oakland. There were also some acts by Chicanos against the Vietnam war in the Fruitvale district. On July 26, 1970, the Oakland Chicano Moratorium protest against the Vietnam War was held in San Antonio Park. One of the speakers was Chicano radical Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzáles. There are also some Chicano school paths against the Vietnam War, especially in local schools such as Fremont High School and Oakland High School. The Chicano movement is also part of the history of Oakland, especially the Fruitvale district. His contribution is still visible throughout the district.

Fruitvale has undergone a rapid renovation. In 2004, the Unity Council opened Fruitvale Transit Village. The "Fruitvale Village" has become a transit-oriented development model, featuring a mix of retail and residential integrated with public transport.

On December 2, 2016, a fire at a warehouse party in Fruitvale killed at least 36 people.

Jingletown

The subdivision of the neighborhood adjacent to the Oakland estuary is called Jingletown, also called "JT" by the natives of East Oakland. The history of Jingletown begins with its name, derived from the habits of nearby factory workers, mostly Portuguese men and Azorean backgrounds, who will rattle coins from a week's work in their pockets as they walk to showcase their prosperity. In the late 1950s and 1960s the Portuguese began to move and the Latin began to move, becoming the majority of Jingletown residents. About half of Jingletown residents are still Latin but demographics change due to gentrification. In 1998, the neighborhood became home to an award-winning housing project that has helped revitalize the community. In 2003, the building boom began, with several local developers installing hundreds of condos, apartments and townhomes by the beach of Estuary. The environment remains home to many working artists living and working in modified attics. This neighborhood was once home to the Mosaic Art Institute, and one can see many mosaics on display in buildings scattered throughout the neighborhood.
