History

In the mid-19th century, the Protestant Methodist Church, now part of United Methodist Church, became active in educational activities in North Carolina. In 1921, after several years of consideration, government agencies throughout the state of the Church Protestant Methodist chose to establish a college. Shortly afterwards the church accepted an offer from High Point residents to contribute 60 hectares (240,000 m 2 ) of land and $ 100,000 for the project, placing a new school in the city of High Point. The campus was designed by R. E. Mitchell of Washington, D.C., assisted by Herbert Hunter of High Point, in the style of the British Renaissance. The school was founded in 1924 as High Point College, a joint venture between the Protestant Methodist Church and High Point residents, and was officially opened on 14 September 1924. When the campus was opened, the campus consisted of three buildings, attended by nine faculty members, with student enrollment 122.

The steady growth that marked the birth of Higher Education ended suddenly with the Great Depression. This period was difficult for the College in 1932-33, because the wages of the professors were cut and the fees sometimes bartered. Despite a $ 50,000 fundraising campaign, the College declared bankruptcy on June 15, 1934 and reorganized in an effort to reduce its debt. The subsequent reorganization allowed the College to move forward with business and new expansions.

On October 9, 1991, under the guidance of President Dr. Jacob C. Martinson, Jr. and Board of Trustees, High Point College changed its name to High Point University to reflect a graduate degree program. Coinciding with the offer of postgraduate studies, each campus building was renovated and a newly constructed quadrangle campus was added to replace the previous city road that divides the campus, and in 2004 the University's donations increased to $ 40 million. When Jacob C. Martinson, Jr. resigned as President in 2005, he is the longest president of United Methodist college in the country.

In 2005, the university was only 92 acres and landlocked with a total of 1,450 undergraduate enrollments. The university's operational budget is only $ 35 million with about 100 faculty members. Since Dr. Nido R. Qubein became President of High Point University in 2005 the growth of the university has had a significant impact on the city, region and state of North Carolina. Qubein is the fourth highest college president, paying $ 2.9 million a year, in the United States.

The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac, April 19, 2016 notes Nido R Qubein is the country's third highest university donor president from 2006-2016. He committed $ 10 million to High Point University. Donations from alumni, parents and HPU supporters total about $ 214 million since 2006. In 2010, the university announced plans to invest about $ 2.1 billion in overall growth over the next decade. To date, High Point University has spent $ 1.2 billion for four new schools plus facilities, faculty and student services.

Ashley Furniture Industries Chairman Ron Wanek donated $ 10 million to High Point University in 2013 after visiting Dr. HPU president. Nido R. Qubein. The award of Wanek to the university was the $ 10 million or more that Qubein earned during his tenure.

On September 14, 2014, the university celebrated its 90th anniversary. As part of the warning, 90 facts about the university are featured in News and Records on the Day of High Point University. On January 3, 2015, Nido R. Qubein celebrated his 10th anniversary as president of High Point University.

In April 2016, High Point University announced plans to invest $ 160 million in new building projects including the 5,000-seater arena and conference center, undergraduate science center and dormitories.

Controversy

Since taking office in 2005, President Nido Qubein has added campus buildings and created student facilities such as concierge services, on-campus steak houses, free car washes and ice cream trucks. In early 2012 Businessweek reported that approximately $ 700 million in new building and campus improvements were financed by heavy loans and Moody's Investors Service downgraded the school bond rating to junk status in 2009 due to the position of the school as one of the most colleges high which is greatly benefited in this country. The US Department of Education's "financial responsibility" scores for fiscal 2012 and 2013 have High Point University scoring the highest possible score, placing the university in front of Elon University, Duke University, and Davidson College. Businessweek responded by inviting schools to make available financial documents to support any challenge to the accuracy of the article, but nothing was offered in response. In addition to questioning the level of debt, Businessweek is questioning whether school relationships with lenders and vendors are at the right distance, citing specifically that schools spend large marketing dollars with public relations firms led by princesses. College claims for a growing reputation in higher education are challenged because it is based more on student facilities and top-class marketing strategies than on solid academics.
