Jacob Anthony deGrom (born June 19, 1988), nicknamed The deGrominator , is a professional American baseball pitcher for New York Mets of Major League Baseball (MLB). Before playing professionally, deGrom attended the University of Stetson and played baseball campus for Stetson Hatters.
DeGrom started playing baseball as a shortstop and was transformed into a pitcher during his first year at Stetson. Mets picked him in the ninth round of MLB Draft 2010, and he made his MLB debut with the Mets on May 15, 2014. That year, deGrom was named the Rookie of the Month National League (NL) twice, and NL Rookie of the Year. By 2015, deGrom is selected as MLB All-Star.

Amateur career
DeGrom attended Calvary Christian College in Ormond Beach, Florida, where he played for baseball and school basketball teams. As a senior, the Florida Sports Writers Association named deGrom to the second All-Florida team. He also played American Legion baseball, where he was noticed by the coach for Stetson Hatters, college baseball team of Stetson University.
DeGrom is not selected in Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft from high school. He enrolled at Stetson University and joined their baseball team where he played exclusively as a shortstop during his first season and second year. Although he is considered a good fielder with powerful throwing arms, deGrom is a lightweight hitter, with a career of.263 batting average. He made his first appearance as a pitcher in May 2009. In the summer of 2009, between his second year and junior, deGrom accepted an invitation to play college summer baseball for DeLand Suns of the Florida Collegiate Summer League, which he rejected after finding that they wanted him to play as a pitcher.
When deGrom returns to the fallen Stetson, the team uses him as a help pitcher, filling their roles closer, in addition to shortstop play. He quickly became one of Stetson's best pitchers, so the team moved deGrom to their early rotation in mid-season. Besides fastball, deGrom learns to throw changes and sliders. MLB talent scouts are starting to pay attention to deGrom when he fights Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast University. In that game, deGrom reached his only home run of the season. He made 12 starts for Hatters, throwing it to a 4-5 win-lose record with an average 4.48 run.

Little League
The New York Mets chose deGrom in the ninth round as a pitcher, with an overall selection of 272, from MLB Draft 2010. He signed a contract with Mets, receiving a signing bonus of $ 95,000. Mets assigns deGrom to Kingsport Mets of the Rookie-level Appalachian League, where he makes six starts before he is diagnosed with a partial tear from the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) on his pitching elbow. He tried to rehabilitate his arms for four months, but underwent Tommy John's surgery to repair UCL in October. He did not swing in 2011 as he recovered from surgery. DeGrom pitched for Savannah Sand Gnats from Class A South Atlantic League and St. Lucie Mets from Class A-Advanced Florida State League in 2012, finishing the year with 2.43 ERA in 19 games starting. In 2013, he started the season with St. Lucie, but was promoted to Binghamton Mets from the Eastern League Class AA after two starts due to injuries to Binghamton's Luis Mateo and Cory Mazzoni. He received promotion to the Las Vegas 51s from the AAA Pacific Coast League Class in June after the Mets promoted Zack Wheeler and Carlos Torres into the premier league and traded Collin McHugh. He has 4.51 ERAs combined for this season, due to a broken finger he suffered during the offseason, which changed the way he threw the ball.
Mets add deGrom to their 40-person list on November 20, 2013, to protect him from being eligible in Rule 5 draft. During the offseason, deGrom improves its mechanism, and learns to throw curveballs. 2014
Mets are promoting deGrom to the premier league on May 12, 2014, after Gonzalez Germen is placed on the disabled list. The Mets plans to use deGrom relief, but an injury to Dillon Gee requires the Mets to put it into their initial rotation. DeGrom made its major league debut on May 15 against the cross-town rivals of the New York Yankees at Citi Field. He faces fellow rookie Chase Whitley, also making his MLB debut. He put up seven innings, allowing only one run and strike six, but the Yankees closed the Mets and won 1-0. DeGrom also collected his first MLB hit in the game in his first career in a bat. It was the first blow by the Mets pitcher in the 2014 season that ended 0-for-64 lines without hit, the worst collective sign by the pitching staff to start the season in MLB history.
DeGrom composed four qualities starting in its first four MLB starters, but did not record any victory in any of them. On July 8, deGrom put up seven scoreless strokes and recorded 11 strikeouts in awarding Mets their 4,000th franchise win. Together with Steve Cishek of the Miami Marlins, deGrom was named National League Player of the Week for the July 21-27 period after allowing only one received run in two starts that week. She was named NL Rookie of the Month for July. On August 11, deGrom went on a defective list with rotator cuff tendinitis. Rafael Montero was called on August 12 at deGrom. On August 23, Montero was again sent back to the 51s to make room for deGrom out of the disabled list.
On 15 September 2014, deGrom faced Marlins and hit the first eight batteries, tying MLB records. Towards the end of the season, deGrom closed for the year, ending the season with a record of 9-6, 2.69 ERA and 144 strikeouts. DeGrom won the 2014 NL Rookie of the Year Award and was named the NL Rookie of the Year by the American Baseball Writers Association (first by Met since Dwight Gooden in 1984) received first place votes on 26 of 30 votes.
2015
deGrom and Clayton Kershaw of Los Angeles Dodgers were selected as Co-Players of NL this Week for the week ending June 7, 2015. He started the 2015 season with a record of 8-6 and 2.30 ERAs to the end of June, and was named to the list NL in the 2015 All-Star MLB Game. During the All-Star Game, deGrom attacked the three batters he faced on ten pitches, becoming the first person to do so because the number of pitches had been recorded. DeGrom pitched to a 14-8 record with 2.54 ERA and 0.99 runs plus a hit per pitched inning ratio during the 2015 season.
Starting Game 1 of the 2015 NLDS, he allowed no running and five hits over seven rounds of tone and tied the postseason Mets franchise record with 13 strikeouts (set by Tom Seaver, Game 1 of 1973 NLCS). DeGrom wins Game 5 deciding with a six-inning, two-run effort. In Game 3 NLCS 2015 against the Chicago Cubs, deGrom launched a seven-inning game, allowing only two runs on four hits, one run and seven strikeouts, placing the 3-0 ahead Mets and in one game from their first World Series appearance since the Subway Series 2000 DeGrom started Game 2 of the World Series 2015 on October 28; he allowed four throws on six strokes and three runs over five innings and took the defeat as the Royals climbed, 2-0, in the series.
After this season, deGrom received the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award as the best defensive player statistically in his position in Major League Baseball. He also finished seventh in the Cy Young Award.

DeGrom initially refused to sign a 2016 contract for the $ 607,000 salary assigned to him. Of the seven early potential pitchers who started the season with the Mets, deGrom is the only one who finished the 2017 season without spending time on the disabled list. deGrom completed the 2017 season with a record of 15-10 and 3.53 ERA. deGrom ranks eighth in a vote for the 2017 NL Cy Young Award.
2018

Her hair inspired the promotion of "Jacob deGrom Hair Hat" giveaway at Citi Field during the 2016 season. Upon learning that an unnamed MLB hitter said that deGrom hair made it harder to take the ball out of her hand, deGrom said in 2016 that she would never cut her hair. However, he cut his hair during the offseason season 2017-18, saying that it can add to the speed of his fast ball, and also that he is tired of having long hair.
DeGrom is a close friend of fellow Mets starting pitchers Zack Wheeler, Steven Matz, and Noah Syndergaard.
