History

The valley that is now the site of Silver City was once an Apache campsite. With the arrival of the Spaniards, the area became famous for its copper mining. After the American Civil War, a settlement evolved and became known as "La CiÃÆ'Â © nega de San Vicente" (Oasis of St Vincent). With a wave of American miners, the pace of change increased, and Silver City was established in the summer of 1870. The city's establishment occurred shortly after the discovery of the silver ore deposit at Chloride Flat, on the hill west of the captain John M. Bullard and his brother James. After the silver strike, Captain Bullard unfurled the streets of Silver City, and the crowded tent city quickly jumped to life. Although the trajectory of Silver City development is different from the hundreds of other mining towns established during the same period, Captain Bullard himself never lived to see even the beginning of immortality, as he was killed in a confrontation with Apache robbers less than a year later, on February 23, 1871.

The crime rate of the city was enormous during the 1870s. However, Sheriff County Grant Harvey Whitehill was elected in 1874, and gained a considerable reputation for his ability to control the problem. In 1875, Whitehill became the first lawyer to capture Billy the Kid, known at the time under the alias of Henry Antrim. Whitehill caught him twice, twice for burglary in Silver City (Sheriff Whitehill testified to the Peace Judge that he believes Henry Antrim did not commit actual theft for a second time was arrested, but helps in hiding the property stolen by Sombrero Jack Whitehill would later claim that the young man was a delightful child, who stole is a more important result than crime. My mother was buried in the city cemetery. In 1878, the city rented marshal his first city, "Dangerous Dan" Tucker., who has worked as a representative of Whitehill since 1875. Butch Cassidy and Wild Bunch were also reportedly visited Silver City in the late 1800s.

Mrs Lettie B. Morrill, in a lecture given to the Daughters of the American Revolution chapter at Silver City on September 19, 1908, stated, "John Bullard placed in the first grave excavated in Silver City, has been killed while punishing Indians for attacking the new city, the brothers were miners about the country for years. The last went to the old house circa 1885, saying, 'It's only a matter of time until the Indians get me if I stay here'. "Silver City also a starting point for many treasure hunts, such as Lost Adams Diggings.

In 1893, the New Mexico Normal School was established. He became known as New Mexico Western State Teachers College. In 1963, his name was changed to Western New Mexico University. Today, WNMU offers eight undergraduate degrees, 41 baccalaureate degrees, and 18 associate titles and certificate programs. WNMU's mascot is called Mustang. The recognition for the university includes the 2003 Zia Award, the 2005 Best Practice Award (for School Education), the 2006 Chambers of Commerce of the Year's Great Business Awards, the Pi Award in 2008, and the 2008 CompaÃÆ'Â Â ero Awards.

The city was originally designed with roads leading north to south. It was also built without adequate planning for rainwater runoff. Businesses are popping up, and people are learning to cope with the discomfort of the summer rains. Silver City is built with high sidewalks in downtown to accommodate high flood waters. However, uncontrolled grazing and deforestation over time in adjacent areas contributes to higher runoff rates. On the night of July 21, 1895, a swift wall of water rushed through the business district of the city center, leaving a trail of destruction. Sewer 55 feet (17 m) lower than the original road level made in what used to be known as Main Street. Businesses on Main Street started using their back door on Bullard Street as the main entrance and finally, permanently used as a new front entrance. To this day, a strange/improper convention on the east side of Bullard Street is a reminder that the buildings were addressed on Main Street originally, not Bullard Street. Main Street now ends near the back of the Silver City Police Station, where Big Ditch Park begins.

The Mimbres Mogollon Indians (A.D. 200-A.D. 1140/50) once lived in the area, along with other prehistoric groups, including Salado. The Mimbres archaeological site is located throughout Silver City and surrounding communities on federal, state, city and private properties. Collect Mimbres pottery by landowners and the others are documented as far back as the 1870s. Collecting is something that happened during a Sunday picnic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some individuals maintain collections that can now be seen at the Smithsonian, and other museums, which sent people out to obtain collections in the nearby Mimbres Valley in the early 1900s. Others are digging ancient sites and using the pottery they find for target practice - something that happened in the 1930s according to oral history. Collecting and plundering, the Mimbres Mogollon site does not stop with archaeological research conducted on private land during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1970s, or with the passage of the New Mexico Cemetery Act in 1989. Unfortunately, unlawful looting continues. today, and many prehistoric sites have been severely damaged or completely obliterated.

The Apaches occupied areas around Silver City from the late 1500s to early 1600s, based on archaeological evidence.
