History

The house was founded by leaders of the Worcester Jewish community in 1914 as home to Jewish orphans. In 1916, the community bought a two-story house on 25 Coral Street and named it "The Jewish House for the Age and Orphans."

Beginning August 11, 1930 Worcester United Jewish President Archibald Hillman requested New York fundraiser George Greenspun to lead a 500-volunteer campaign to raise $ 125,000 from the Worcester community for a new facility. The campaign is unique because for the first time, non-Jewish citizens of Worcester were asked to contribute to Jewish organizations in the city. In 1932, the House was moved to 1029 Pleasant Street where he could care for 14 children and 22 elderly following a successful development campaign. In the mid-1930s, Home changed its focus solely to the needs of the elderly and was given the name "Jewish House for Worcester County Age." The house was expanded with 34 beds in 1948 after a $ 250,000 campaign.

The current 141 bed facility at 629 Salisbury Street, an architectural example of Brick Brutalist, opened in February 1975 after another successful campaign earned $ 3.5 million. The home population is mostly Jewish because it is the only halal nursing home in Worcester.

On May 3, 1998, the land was damaged on land adjacent to the House in The Gery and Emil Eisenberg Assisted Living Residence, an 80 unit facility named for Denise Rich's parents who donated $ 1 million.

In 2007, in recognition of a major contribution from the Bailin Brothers Foundation, the campus at 629 Salisbury Street was named for the Bailin family.

On April 29, 2014, JHC launched the "Namaste Care" program, a new holistic approach to end-of-life care for dementia patients where they experience massage, food and music known (via iPod) and other comforts in soundproofed rooms..
