Dr. Kova Injury? is a fictitious character in the television series ER depicted by Goran Visnjic. Visnjic characters added to the player at the start of Season 6 (1999) after mid-season 5 departure of main character Dr Doug Ross, played by George Clooney.
Kova Injury? is an emergency room that visits doctors from Croatia. He talks about having a childhood of fun, albeit financially simple, with at least one brother, and he keeps in touch with his father, who is an amateur painter and engineer working at the Croatian Railway in Zagreb. The wound served in the Croatian army, and saw the battle. He is a family man, with a wife (Danijela), son (Marko), and daughter (Jasna). Jasna is her older son, and from a birthday photo we know she's at least four.
When Croatia's War of Independence (1991-1995) broke out, Luka stayed at Vukovar, and at first hesitated to move, because he wanted to finish his apprenticeship. He ended up waiting too long, and it became unsafe to leave. When he came out one morning, a bombardment happened, and his apartment building was hit by mortar shells. Her infant son died instantly. His wife and daughter died several hours later. He brings guilt from the incident because he can take his wife to the hospital and save her; because he instead chose to stay and do CPR on his daughter (who failed), while his wife bleed to death.
He moved to the United States some time after that for a new beginning, but the evidence he suffered both from the guilt of the survivor and PTSD soon surfaced, mostly in terms of his personal relationships. Although initially reluctant to settle in one place, preferring to travel between Chicago and an unnamed southern city on his boat, a job offer from Kerry Weaver took him to take a permanent position in the County General. This will be the first of several important decisions to be made that Luka is partially influenced by the relationship in his life.

Relationships
Luka has been in three serious relationships since he settled in Chicago. Soon after arriving at the County General he became interested in the pregnant Nurse Head, Carol Hathaway, although their relationship was mostly friends. For Luka, Carol was the first temporary endeavor in romance, albeit with a woman like his own wife, and for Carol, it was a step toward the next phase of her life. After her twins were born, the kiss between Luka and Carol served as enlightenment for Carol and she left Chicago for Seattle to be with her true love, and the father of her children, Dr. Doug Ross. While engaged with Carol, Luka meets and starts teaching Nurse Abby Lockhart's medical student, who will eventually become the longest and most important relationship in her new life. Luka acknowledges the potential to become a good doctor inside her, and begins to guide and encourage when her personal life causes her to resign from medical school.
It was this support along with Carol's loss that triggered Luka's next relationship. At the start of season 7, Luka becomes involved with Abby, now ER nurse, after a spontaneous kiss leads her to reconsider her relationship with him. It was a relationship marked by trouble from their first date, when they were robbed and Luka accidentally killed their assailant in self-defense. They drift into sexual relations after looting, and at first, can not define or commit to their relationship, even though for a while they are happy. A meeting with a dying bishop gives Luka the absolute size of his wife's death, and for a while, she seems ready to move forward. However, the recurring appearance of Abby's troubled mother, along with the continuous annoyance by Dr. John Carter, the Abby turned as an enabler, was too much for a fragile relationship and resulting in a breakup.
Although the separation was fierce, Luka remained pretty protective of him (especially after he was attacked by his neighbors). Over the next few years, he and Abby gradually made close friendships. However, the separation greatly affected Luka, and he then experienced a long period in which he could not form a satisfactory relationship. He has many demons and tends to be emotionally covered and, for a short time, uses sex to drown his problems. He has a series of brief relationships, before developing an unusual relationship with a prostitute who seems to serve more as a psychotherapist. An affair between Luka and nurse Chuny Marquez ended badly in Season 9 and resulted in Wounds being suspended briefly due to unprofessional behavior. She rejected a series of advances by Erin Harkins medical student (Leslie Bibb) before making a drunk pass after a painful encounter with Abby. Harkins was badly injured in a car accident the next day, when he was driving exhausted and angry at his Dodge Viper. As a result, PTSD and Luka depression took him for a short leave from the hospital. When Kerry rudely refuses, he leaves AWOL from County and returns before Kerry will officially fire him. Despite his depression, he was able to save a boy's life by using unconventional methods, and was allowed to remain on the condition he was undergoing counseling by which he was very cooperative. The combination of guilt over his mistakes at the hospital, the guilt of the survivors and PTSD eventually led him to take on a high-risk task in Africa with the Alliance Medicines organization.
When Carter returned to the United States, Luka continued to work at a rural clinic in Congo until he contracted malaria; despite symptoms, he helped evacuate patients during the rebel attack. However, he was arrested by the rebels two days later, along with his patient and surviving colleagues. When the prisoners were dragged one by one to their execution, Luka knelt down and began praying (in Croatian) for the first time in a few years. Although the rebels initially objected and pointed their weapons at him, their leader saw a small cross hanging on the neck of Luka, given to him by the mother of a young patient. Thinking that Luka was a priest, the rebels knelt around him and joined him in prayer, releasing him the next day along with his three surviving patients. Carter finds him half dead from malaria in the refugee camp, after returning to Africa because County has been told Luka is killed (his I.Dnya has been found in a burning clinic). Opting to stay in Congo for a while, Carter sends Luka back to County on a return flight.
Upon his return from Africa, Luka started a relationship with Nurse Samantha Taggart, and for about a year and a half everything seemed pretty good until he expressed his desire to have more children. Sam already has a son, Alex, whom he loves very much, but declares, with absolute conviction, that he really finished having a child. Sam and Luka end up frustrated by their inability to communicate with each other (Injuries with Sam keep things from him, and Sam with Luka's reluctance to discuss his past or admit their relationship has a problem) that causes Sam and Alex to move. Their separation, though somewhat harsh, can finally be resolved peacefully. One consequence, though, is that Luka's involvement with Alex is now very limited. However, like most of the people he encounters who have experienced great difficulty, Luka continues to protect Sam and Alex.
The wound then begins to see Abby Lockhart (Maura Tierney) again after an argument that turns into a kiss, and an overnight affair. Abby became pregnant by Luka from this encounter and debated whether to have an infant due to a family history of bipolar disorder. Luka abandoned the decision to him, but a few days later he told him he wanted to keep it; though they still keep both their apartments and are not involved (Abby who suspects marriage since the first time she had a disaster) they start living together and look happy.
Luka is a committed doctor, and is considered one of the more approachable participants. He is also a world health advocate, and more than once donated his services to the Doctors Without Borders program, almost dying on one occasion. Although once a man of faith, Luka has struggled with his religious beliefs. Such doubts arose after the death of his family. When dealing with Bishop Lionel Stewart (played by James Cromwell), he seems to be familiar with his bitterness, though he still wrestles with what is God and irresponsible. As a person attending, he is generally a patient teacher for residents and medical students, although his commitment to teaching sometimes creates the frustrated nurses needed to escape from patient to patient.
He and Dr. John Carter once had strong competition arising out of their interest in Abby - to the point that the fencing in "Secrets and Lies" resulted in both drawing blood - but their shared experience in Congo, as did the unborn death of Carter's son , make them understand each other better, and they become true friends. It is said in Season 12 that the two are interconnected with each other while Carter is still in Africa. It is likely that they stayed in touch until Season 15, when Carter realized that both Abby and Luka moved to Boston.
After the departure of Dr Susan Lewis, Luka was appointed Head of Emergency Medicine in Season 12, by Kerry Weaver who was initially reluctant. Competition is a new, brilliant but unstable doctor named Victor Clemente; The wound and Clemente had locked the horns even before they competed for the job. They both remain hostile for a while, but gradually improve the fence; Nonetheless, Clemente's personal problems (including suspected of shooting her boyfriend, and insomnia developed from being followed by her ex-husband) forced Luka to admit it to PTSD towards the end of Season 12 and fired him. Kerry Weaver initially blamed Luka for Clemente's misfortune caused on her watch; However, when he realized that the council wanted to fire Luka at the beginning of Season 13 he admitted he had kept him in-staff against Luka's wishes for months, saving his career and making himself demoted to Present. The wound was then forced to consider firing him (which led to protests from many staff, including Abby) but he found a way to keep him working. In the end, Kerry resigned about half a season and sought a new career in Florida, parting well with Luka.
In "Twenty-One Guns," the season 12 final, Kovac was injected with a crippled drug during an escape attempt by Sam's imprisoned ex-husband. Since he could not breathe independently for some time and could die, Sam forced his kidnappers to let him intubate before they took him from the hospital. The wound woke up an hour later with the tube still in his throat, tied to the gurney. In the ensuing gunfight, he watched helplessly from another room as Abby's pregnant weight fell to the ground due to his internal wounds.
In the 13th season of the premiere, "Bloodline," Kovac was saved by Weaver, only to find out that Abby suffered serious injuries as a result of a firefight. Wounds accompany Abby when she is taken to the OB where it is known that she needs to undergo a caesarean section, a complication that causes Abby also undergoing a hysterectomy. The baby (who Abby and Luka decide to name Josip, after Luka's father, but calls "Joe" because Abby's father is a fan of boxer Joe Frazier) was born prematurely; consequently, it has an undeveloped lung and some other serious problems. After several stressful weeks and emergency surgery, a healthy Joe is released from the hospital, and Luka and Abby become parents. Soon after returning to work, Luka had to defend himself in a malpractice suit brought by Curtis Ames (played by Forest Whitaker), a carpenter who suffered a debilitating stroke when under Kova's treatment for pneumonia. Luka won the case, but he and Abby were stalked for months by the vengeful Ames. The situation becomes climax when Ames takes Luka hostage, subjecting him to the night of mental and physical torture (by destroying Kova's hand in a vise), and shooting himself to death, on the roof, in horror. doctors, when police surrounded them. Then, Abby asked her to propose to her, and she did. Luka suggested they keep the engagement a secret, which Abby agreed with, but the staff soon found out.
After their secrets come out, Abby's slowness plotting their marriage begins to frustrate Luka, so she takes action. In the episode "I Do not," Luka prepares a surprise marriage for Abby, and then convinces her to marry her right then and there. The night before they were leaving for the honeymoon, however, he received a call from Croatia informing him that his father was ill, so the honeymoon was delayed while Luka made an emergency trip to his home country. When Kovac comes home, he is happy to see Joe and Abby. News soon arrived that his father died in Croatia. As he prepares to return to Croatia, Abby tells him that he has started drinking again but did not tell him that he slept with another doctor when he left. While Abby sought help for his alcoholism, Luka and Joe returned to Croatia for his father's funeral. When Abby was in rehab, Luka was able to return to Chicago to visit her, when she quit her job in County. After being released from rehab, Abby joins him, and tells him about his affair. They returned to the US soon afterwards, and Luka began to show signs he wanted to leave the wedding. She took a position as a doctor in a small nursing home that voiced the desire to do something good when she tried to decide what to do about marriage, ignoring Abby's regrets. There, he meets an old man who taught him some lessons about life and forgiveness, and at the end of Season 14, Luka decides to forgive Abby after first encountering Kevin Moretti. He suggested to Abby that they were leaving Chicago, and they decided to leave.
During the last 15 and seasons of ER , at the end of the episode The Book of Abby, the long-serving nurse Haleh Adams showed Abby Lockhart leaving the wall of the closet where all the doctors and employees of the day and then have labeled their locker name. Abby then added the label name of her locker and Luka to the wall. Kovac's last appearance in the series came late in the episode, when he came to pick up Abby before they left for Boston. They hugged each other with a kiss and gave a final goodbye to their friends in County, a scene echoing the 6th Season episode in which Carol left him to join Doug in a kiss after telling Luka that he would find the right woman someday. The wound is no longer seen in the series, but Abby shows in a phone call to Neela that the three of them settled in Boston well.
