A Liter of Light @ Night - YouTube
src: i.ytimg.com

Liter of Light is an open source design for low-cost light tube that refracts sunlight to provide daytime interior lighting for dwellings with thin roofs. Daytime lighting is cheaper than using electric lights indoors during the day. The device is simple: a transparent two-liter bottle filled with water plus a bit of bleach to inhibit algal growth and be installed into a hole in the roof. The device functions like a deck prism: during the daytime the water in the bottle refracts sunlight, producing as much light as 40-60 watt incandescent bulbs to the inside. Properly installed solar bottles can last up to 5 years.

History

The use of plastic bottles in this way to provide indoor lighting from daylight was developed by Alfredo Moser of Brazil. Using technology as a social company was first launched in the Philippines by Illac Diaz under the My Shelter Foundation in April 2011. To help the idea grow sustainably, Diaz applies the business model of "local entrepreneurs" where bottled balls are assembled and installed by local residents, who can earn a small income for their work. Within months, a carpenter and a set of tools in a community in San Pedro, Laguna, expanded the organization to 15,000 solar bulb bottle installations in 20 cities and provinces across the Philippines, and began inspiring local initiatives around the world. MyShelter Foundation also established a training center that organizes workshops with youth, business firms, and other groups interested in volunteering their time to build lights in their communities.

In less than a year since its inception, more than 200,000 bottle balls were installed in various communities around the world. The Liter of Light aims to illuminate 1 million homes by the end of 2015.

About the MyShelter Foundation

The MyShelter Foundation was founded by Illac Diaz in 2006 to create a system of sustainability and reliability through project building capabilities and job creation. Based on the concept of social enterprise, appropriate low-cost technology, and alternative construction in the Philippines, the MyShelter Foundation has pioneered projects such as Pier One Seafarer Boarding, Design Competition Element (DAtE), and School Bottle Project.

Description of technology

The Solar Bottle Bulb, as it is also called, is mounted on the roof of the house in order to bias the sunlight to illuminate the room. The project innovation lies in the utilization of cheap, durable materials available to produce high quality natural lighting that allows the urban poor to have access to an affordable and environmentally friendly long-term alternative to electric light for daytime use.

Most of the plastic bottles used are 1.5 liter recycled bottles. Once filled with water and a little bleach, the bottle is pushed through a steel sheet that serves as a metal key to prevent it from slipping. It was then embedded into a corrugated iron roof. A small portion of the bottle is left outside while the rest stands out into the house. The sealant is placed around a hole made on the roof to make it weatherproof. The properties of water bias ensure that the light from the sun reaching the inside of the bottle becomes omni-directional that mimics the electric light bulb and emits the same amount of light as a 40-60 W incandescent bulb depending on the amount of solar insulation available. Adding bleach to water prevents it from turning green with algae and ensuring high quality light keeps clear water for longer periods of time. To facilitate the use of the present invention through an open source mechanism, a step-by-step guide on materials and installation is available online.

Lem

Using glue that is durable, anti-leak, and fill the space, which is not melted by the sun, is one of the main challenges for the solution. Many local groups experiment with different adhesives to find the best solution for cost and quality. It is commonly found that silicone-based or polyurethane glue works best. The inventor, Alfredo Moser, used polyester resin.

Egypt

A group of seven students from the French University of Egypt (UFE) has started a local Liter of Light in the context of a social and environmental development project. In November 2014, PepsiCo announced that it would implement Liter of Light in three villages in upper Egypt, with two partners: SunUtions Company for solar power solutions and Masr ElKheir organization.

French

In 2015, the French Liter of Light was created. The French branch is developing an important relationship between pedagogical projects in Europe and international cooperation around the world. NGOs want in Europe to make a new generation aware of the reality of energy poverty and show that they can have, with little activity, enormous social and environmental impacts. NGOs want, too, to deliver a message to developing countries that new generations around the world care about World Citizenship. During international cooperation, the French Liter of Light underscores the main philosophy of the movement as a technological innovation that is accessible to everyone, capacity building, and South-South initiatives. The movement in France was started by Olivier Lasbouygues, Paola Sierra and Isabel Rico.

India

Inspired by Isang Litrong Liwanag project, Liter of Light was introduced to Indians by Pradeep Chanti. The first experiment was conducted in Vikarabad, a village in Telangana in 2011. The bulb was successfully installed and still functioning. With this experience, the team is gradually expanding its concept.
