Founder Biography
Marshall Bidwell Ketchum, MD, born in Canada in 1856, and became a Canadian pharmacist after years of study. Dr. Ketchum wanted to continue his education, so he went to the United States to study medicine at the Eclectic Medical Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated with an MD degree in 1882. He then entered private practice in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Ketchum eventually became a faculty member at Nebraska's Lincoln Medical College teaching medicine for aspiring young doctors, who eventually transitioned to perform Lincoln Optical College from 1896-1903. After his time at Lincoln Optical College, Dr. Ketchum moved to Los Angeles and started the Ophthalmology and Optometry School in Los Angeles in March 1904. This was an exciting time for the optometry profession, as it had just begun to develop differently. the profession apart from the general treatment. Over the years, Dr. Ketchum worked tirelessly to develop the program and merged several schools into college, which became a non-profit in 1938. Ketchum served as university president until 1920.
Ketchum wrote the book Ketchum's Lessons on the Eye, published in 1920, detailing eye anatomy and early optometric medical practice.
In April 1937, Dr. Ketchum died, and Marshall B. Ketchum, MD Memorial Library was founded in his memory at the end of that year. In 2004, Dr. Ketchum is named SCCO Centennial Honoree. In 2013, due to the development and expansion of an educational offer from 109-year-old Southern California College of Optometry, Marshall B. Ketchum University was established and named in Ketchum honor. The first program to be added is the School of PA Studies, whose first matriculation class is in 2014. This is the first school for PA in Orange County.
University History
Marshall B. Ketchum, MD, founded the Los Angeles Medical School of Ophthalmology and Optometry in March 1904, in downtown Los Angeles, CA. In 1906, the name was changed to the Los Angeles Optical College and Post Graduate School of Opticians. In 1909, the school was affiliated with Southern California Eye College and became Southern California College of Optometry and Ophthalmology. At that time, two degrees were awarded by the school, Optometry Doctor for a period of six months ($ 75 lectures) and Doctor Ophthalmology and Optometry for a period of eight months ($ 100 lectures). During the early 1920s, faculty worked to develop a standardized curriculum and expand the program into two years. In 1930, the school became affiliated with the University of Southern California (USC). During this time, there was a debate about the scope of the practice, the program curriculum and the degree earned, and the optometry license. In 1933, the school was separated from USC and once again became the Los Angeles School of Optometry. The school started the rebuilding phase after the split from USC by strengthening its curriculum and building a program for Assistant Optometry (which was not successfully implemented until 1973). After World War II, the flood of applicants forced class size to improve and administration to search for larger campuses. In 1948, the school became the Los Angeles College of Optometry and moved to a larger campus at 950 West Jefferson in Los Angeles, CA. After years of growth and development, the search for a larger campus resulted in the development of a new Fullerton campus in the early 1970s. During this time the college also changed its name to Southern California College of Optometry in 1972. The college moved to 2575 Yorba Linda Blvd., Fullerton, in 1973.

The appearance of MBKU
MBKU President Kevin L. Alexander, OD, PhD, started at SCCO in 2008 and has supported the University's mission to move SCCO towards interprofessional education (IPE). IPE is an innovative model for delivering high quality primary health care with the idea that an interprofessional, team-based approach to health care not only provides better patient care, but also increases the value of education for next generation healthcare providers. Under the leadership of Dr. Alexander, the university has worked to add additional health professional programs, such as PA programs and pharmacy programs, to create an IPE environment. The university's goal is to create a campus with a team-based health care model to prepare students for future health care.
The PA program was first established in 2012, and the first matriculation classes begin in Autumn 2014. With this new addition, Marshall B. Ketchum University officially hosts the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) and School of PA Studies (SPAS) on July 1, 2013. The university is named after the founder of optometric institute, Marshall B. Ketchum. The changing structure of the university is aimed at increasing demand for highly skilled health care professionals. Dr. Alexander named the university president. Stanley Woo, OD, joined the university as Dean of Optometry, while John Nishimoto, OD, MBA from SCCO, took the position of Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. The core groups responsible for creating the PA program include: Medical Director Daniel May, MD, Clinical Coordinator Don Ragsdale, MPAS, PA-C, and Associate Professor, Assistant Dean, Founding Director of the School of Physician Studies Teresa Thetford, PA-C, RNP , MS. The College of Pharmacy is planned at Marshall B. Ketchum University was founded in 2014 with Robert P. Rosenow, PharmD, OD, as the Founding Dean. Edward Fisher, PhD, R.Ph., will take the position of Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Marshall B. Ketchum University in 2016, when the planned pharmaceutical program will begin.
Patient center
Anaheim and Los Angeles There are two clinical teaching facilities affiliated with Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B. Ketchum University. The University Eye Center at Ketchum Health Anaheim is located at 5460 E. La Palma Ave. in Anaheim. The University Eye Center at Ketchum Health Los Angeles is located at 3916 S. Broadway in Los Angeles. Both facilities are large patient care centers offering prime eye care services, contact lenses, vision vision, vision therapy, eye diseases, low vision and dry eyes. In addition to eye care services, there is also an optical services department where opticians assist in selecting and/or adjusting glasses. They are open six days a week and receive primary vision insurance as well as major medical insurance.
Ketchum Health
On January 23, 2015, Dr. Alexander announced the acquisition of a new building in Anaheim, CA, which is now the home of the University Eye Center, and allows the expansion of future health and pharmaceutical care services. The name of the new facility, Ketchum Health, is dedicated to the founding of the university. Marshall B. Ketchum. Due to the addition of a PA program in 2014, and a pharmaceutical program by 2016, this expansion of clinical space is needed for developing universities. This will be the place where interprofessional clinical training can take place, as well as patient-based patient care. On June 15, 2015, over a hundred guests attended the first stone laying ceremony marking the start of the renovation for Ketchum Health. The University Eye Center at Ketchum Health, as the first phase of an interprofessional healthcare center, opens its doors at a new location May 31, 2016.

Southern California College of Optometry
Founded in 1904, SCCO is one of the oldest optometry schools in the US. Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) is a 4-year post-baccalaureureate program leading to a degree, Doctor of Optometry (OD), accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometry Education (ACOE) of the American Optometric Association. During the first year, students spend most of their time in lectures and basic science learning laboratories (including optics, biomedical sciences, and visual sciences) and introductory clinical procedures. Throughout the year, the first year students will have an observation hour in the clinic as an introduction to patient care. During the second year, students will have more advanced lectures in visual science and spend time studying and perfecting clinical procedures. Students will gradually make it easier to see patients at Ketchum Health to prepare them for third and fourth year clinics. Third year students spend half their time in college and the other half in patient care under the supervision of clinical faculty. Advanced course topics, including courses in contact lenses, vision therapy, eye diseases, ocular pharmacology, clinical optometry and public health. The last year (fourth year) consists of four 3-month rotations as part of the Outreach Clinical Program. One clinical rotation in a special service in Ketchum Health and three other rotations is located in off-site clinics. Students can choose from over 80 clinic sites in the US and abroad.
The Doctor of Optometry degree will be awarded to students who satisfactorily complete the four-year academic and professional curriculum in optometry. Upon successful completion of the SCCO program and the NBEO exam, graduates may apply for a license in the US or Canada.
School of PA Studies
The School of PA Studies at Marshall B. Ketchum University is a 27-month graduate undergraduate program leading to the Master of Medical Science (MMS) degree. Physician Assistants (PAs) are licensed health care experts to practice drugs on teams under the supervision of doctors and surgeons. As part of their comprehensive responsibilities, the PA conducts physical examinations, diagnoses and treats diseases, orders and interprets tests, advice on preventive health care and assist in surgery. ARC-PA has granted Accreditation - Temporary Status to School of Physician Assistant Studies sponsored by Marshall B. Ketchum University.
The premier PA class starts the program in fall 2014 with 28 enrolled students. The first year curriculum (didactic year) consists of lectures and workshops focusing on applied medical sciences, pharmaceutical science, clinical medicine, professional medical ethics and more. During the first year, students will have supervised patient care experience. The second year focuses on direct patient care in various health care settings. Students experience twelve clinical rotations 6 weeks throughout the year, offering a variety of clinical experiences. In addition to completing the rotation, students must also complete the Capstone Master Project to graduate.
Upon successful completion, students must pass the National Association of Physician Assistant Certification (PANCE), a computer-based multiple choice test, to become a PA certified. Successful completion of the PANCE is required to apply for a PA country license. The 2016 Class at PA Studies School reaches the first graduation rate of 100%.
Academy of Pharmacy
The College of Pharmacy is founded in 2014. The starting class of 2020 begins in autumn 2016. The College of Pharmacy at Marshall B. Ketchum University is a 4-year post-graduate program leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. Some of the main objectives for the College of Pharmacy are to foster interprofessional education and clinical practice experience among all students across different health programs. By providing a comprehensive curriculum, universities hope to prepare their students for licensing and practice upon graduation. In addition, the university's vision is to encourage students to recognize the role and value of the pharmaceutical profession through leadership opportunities.
Pharmacy Doctor Degree (PharmD) will be awarded to students who satisfactorily complete the curriculum. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to take the exam to obtain the license. There are two checks: the North American Pharmacist License Test (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE), which is a state-specific test that is currently required by 48 countries as a licensing component.

Master of Science in Vision Science
The Master of Science (MS) in vision science is a research-based postgraduate degree that emphasizes hypothesis-driven research and the development of analytical skills in experimental optometry and vision science. At university, students interested in the Master's program often pursue a joint degree of OD/MS. Other options include Traditional MS, MS Residency, and MS Part-time. The Master's program requires completion of at least 60 hours of post-graduate credit, a cumulative grade graduate average of at least 3.00, completion of the Master's research requirements, successful defense of the MS thesis, and submission of final deadline copies of the thesis.
Optometry Residences
While it is not necessary to practice optometry, residency is a good option for newly awarded optometrists to polish clinical skills and specialize in specific optometry fields. Optometric residency is a planned program of post-OD clinical education designed to significantly advance the preparation of optometric graduates as a provider of patient care services beyond the beginner's level of practice. The residency program is at least 12 months old and includes a mix of self-study, seminar participation, learning experiences, and scholarships.
SCCO started its postdoctoral residency program in 1977, with its first residency program at Vision Therapy. This program has been expanded to include: Cornea & amp; Contact Lenses, Low Vision Rehabilitation, Eye Disease, Primary Care, or Optometry/Child's Eye Therapy. SCCO offers 22 residency programs with 47 residency positions in six countries including California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Washington and Utah.
