Medgar Evers College is a senior college of the University of New York City (CUNY), offering baccalaureate and associate degrees. Formally established in 1970 through collaboration between educators and community leaders in central Brooklyn. Named after Medgar Wiley Evers, an African American civil rights leader murdered on June 12, 1963.

Colleges are divided into four schools: Business School, Professional School and Community Development, School of Arts and Liberal Education, and School of Science, Health, and Technology. The university also operates several external programs and related centers such as the Center for Men's Development and Empowerment, Women's Development Center, Black Literary Center, and DuBois Bunche Public Policy Center. The college is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Campus

College is currently located in four buildings, 1150 Carroll Street ("The Carroll Street Building"), a gross building with a capacity of 152,000 square feet (14,100 m) built as Brooklyn Preparatory School. in 1908, 1650 Bedford Avenue ("The Bedford Building"), a gross building of 12,000 square feet (12,000 m 2 ) was completed in 1988, and School of Business Development and Student Support, 1637 Bedford Avenue ("The 'S' Building"), a gross building of 44,950 square feet (4,176m 2 ). The new Academic Building (AB1), structurally designed by Leslie E. Robertson Associates (LERA), and designed by Ennead Architects, accommodates the sciences, the new cafeteria, and the Edison O. Jackson auditorium that opened in the fall of 2010. Five a 194,000 square foot (18,000m 2 ) dirty brick structure on the north side of Crown Street, features a computer-enabled smart classroom, a laboratory and a dining room of 500 people. The college currently maintains another administrative office elsewhere in Brooklyn.

Some of the land located in college was originally the location of the King's Correctional Institution - known as Crow Hill Correctional Institution - from 1848-1907. When closed and destroyed, the site became the site of the Brooklyn Preparatory School, a Jesuit institution, until 1972, when the school was closed. The land was then sold to CUNY.

Reception

Medgar Evers College has an open admissions policy. New students entering the Baccalaureateate program must have an average of at least 80 high schools with at least 17 academic units such as four English units, four social learning units, three mathematics units, two foreign language units, two science units and two regular academic subjects , and a minimum SAT score of 960 (480 Verbal 480 Math) or an ACT composite score of 20 or more.

In 2004-07, from Medgar Evers' 4,614 students, 21% were male and 79% were female; with racial/ethnic details of 5% non-resident aliens, 87% non-Hispanic Black, 1% Asian or Pacific Islander, 5% Hispanic, and 2% non-Hispanic White.

Academics

Medgar Evers College offers baccalaureate degrees and associate degrees in several disciplines. It offers a Certified Practical Nursing certificate program (LPN) through its Nursing Department. It also offers a number of programs and certificate programs through the Sustainable Education component of the School of Professional and Community Development.

Business School

The School of Business has generated over 2,000 graduates from its program, including lawyers, judges, public accountants, managers, and entrepreneurs. The school is accredited by the Association of Business Schools and Collegiate Programs (ACBSP) and members of the Association of National Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). The School of Business is home to a chapter of the international Muzi Delta Mu Delta community. School of Business is also a place for Entrepreneurship & amp; Experiential Learning Lab, which operates a number of programs including the International Initiative Initiative (IN2NYC) and the CEED Virtual Program (Community Entrepreneurship, Engagement, & Development) with corporate sponsorship SourceFunding.org.

School of Liberal Arts and Education

The Liberal Arts and Education School offers the largest part of the program that forms the core curriculum of Liberal Arts College. Approximately 45 percent of full-time College enrollment is supported at the School of Liberal Arts & amp; Education. Liberal Arts School & amp; Home education of six academic departments: Education, Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS), English, Mass Communication, Psychology, Social Sciences and Behavior (SBS), and Philosophy & Religious Studies. Two Associate Degree and two Bachelor's degrees are offered at the School. Associate of Arts Degree in Education and Bachelor of Arts Degree for early childhood teachers and elementary schools offered by the Ministry of Education. The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.

School School of Science, Health and Technology

The Faculty of Science, Health and Technology consists of Department of Biology, Mathematics, Nursing, and Physical, Environmental and Computer Science. It offers degrees at baccalaureate and associate levels.

The Faculty of Science, Health and Technology also offers a special Transfer Opportunity to the Allied Health Program at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Students completing the courses specified at MEC are given a preferred acceptance into four Suny Downstate Medical Center degree programs: Doctoral Assistant Program, Physical Therapy Program, Diagnostic Medical Imaging Program, and Occupational Therapy Program.

Academic center

There are also many academic centers in the College, which support scholarships and services to residents of Central Brooklyn, and the greater New York area. These include:

Student life

The College is home to a number of student clubs and organizations, including ADAFI student newspapers, local student chapters of the American Marketing Association and the National Association of Black Accountants; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity - Alpha Alpha Phi Chapter; and Upsilon Theta Pi, the College's women's honorary organization. This college is also home to Alpha Chapter of Pi Eta Kappa Honor Fraternity. Pi Eta Kappa, a social and academic initiative of the Center for the Development and Empowerment of Men, was established in 2007 by Dr. Morehouse alumni. Judge Lucas, Rev. S. Athletics

The Medgar Evers College team participates as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III. The Cougars is a member of the City University of the New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC). Men's sports include basketball, cross country, soccer, track & amp; field and volleyball; while women's sports include basketball, cheerleading, cross country, soccer, tennis, track & amp; field and volleyball.

Famous faculty

  • Roger Green, a former State of New York, a faculty member at the Department of Public Administration.
  • George Ireland, academic, activist, and renowned academic community activist.
  • The late John Oliver Killens taught at High School before his death in 1987, and founded the National Black Writers Conference.
  • Former Congressman Major Owens, lecturer at the Department of Public Administration.
  • Betty Shabazz, Malcolm X's wife, taught at Medgar Evers College beginning in 1976 and then headed the College's Office of Progress and Public Relations until his death in 1997. In 2003, the Shabazz statue was made and placed in permanence. displayed at the Bedford House.
