The Renault Twizy is a two-seat electric car designed and marketed by Renault and produced in Valladolid, Spain. Legally classified in Europe as a heavy quadricycle (light quadricycle for the low-powered Urban 45 model), Twizy has a maximum range of 100 km (62 mi).

Twizy debuted as a concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2009 and was designed by FranÃÆ'§oise Leboinne and Luciano Bove. In November 2010, Nissan announced a rebadged variant to Twizy, called New Mobility Concept , or NMC . In May 2011, Renault announced that it would produce Twizy and start taking reservations.

In March 2012, Twizy was released to the French market, followed a month later by several other European countries. Available in three models, from EUR6,990 to EUR8,490 (in the UK: GBÃ, £ 6,990 to GBÃ, £ 7,400 ), Twizy's sales price is not included battery, which is rented for a monthly fee that includes roadside assistance and battery replacement warranty.

Twizy is the best-selling plug-in electric vehicle in Europe during 2012. A milestone of 15,000 Twizys sold worldwide achieved in April 2015. In May 2016, the European region was the top selling market with more than 17,000 units sold, led by Germany (4,404) , France (4,048) and Italy (2,696). Global cumulative sales reached 19,342 units by December 2016.

Construction and security

Twizy is an ultra-compact vehicle, with a length of 2.32 meters (7 feet 7 inches), 1.19 meters wide (3 feet 11 inches) and a height of 1.46 meters (4 feet 9 inches).

The frame and body of the vehicle offers extra protection with its shapeable structure, while the four-wheel outlet position and lateral beam located on either side of the chassis provide protection in case of side collisions. Safety retention systems include driver's airbags, four-point seat belts in front and three dots behind.

The Twizy can be frozen with winter tires and add a flexi side window to attach the cabin. Heating will be provided by inserting an electric blanket to keep the driver warm.

Model

The Twizy model is electric, and therefore is part of the Renault Zero Emissions program.

Twizy Urban

Twizy Twizy Urban 45

The Twizy range starts with the light quadricycle-classed Urban 45 which is priced EUR6,990 in Europe with a monthly battery charge fee of EUR50. It has a motor power of 4 kW (5 hp), a maximum speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) and thus can be driven in most European countries by drivers of 14 years with special driving license (France, Italy, Spain) or with moped license (Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Finland).

Twizy Twizy Urban 80

The Urban 80 quadricycle heavyweight model has an electric motor of 13 kW (17 hp) and can go up to 80 km/h (50 mph). This is priced at EUR7,690.

Color and Twizy Techniques

The Color model is Twizy colorful and 'fun' available for trim 45 and 80.

The Technique model brings additional design elements while sharing technical features with Urban. It costs EUR8,490, and is available for 45 and 80 trims.

Twizy Cargo

In June 2013 Renault announced the launch of Twizy Cargo, a model designed to transport goods. The space destined for the second passenger seat is replaced with a cargo box with a volume of 180 L (6.4 cuÃ, ft) and a maximum weight capacity of 75 kg (165 lb).

The Cargo 45 has 4 kW of power and the top speed is limited to 45 km/h (28 mph). The car only has 1 seat and there is a bigger space behind the driver to store the goods. Nissan NMC

The rebirth version of Twizy was launched in Japan as the Nissan New Mobility Concept (NMC). The electric vehicle is deployed in Yokohama on October 11, 2013 for service on a one-way carharing program called "Choimobi Yokohama" (Choimobi means "easy mobility" in Japanese). During the first month on the market, more than 2700 customers signed up for the service. A total of 45 units are registered until the end of October 2013.

Battery

6.1 kWh lithium-ion battery (22 M MJ) is located under the front seat. Both variants of the motor have the same weight that is 474 kg (1,045 pounds), including the battery 100 kg (220 pounds). The range is homologated at 100 km (62 mi). In real conditions, Renault announced about 80 km (50 mi). In the worst condition (high speed, no eco-driving), Twizy can reach 50 km (31 mi).

The battery can be charged with an extended spiral cable that is stored under the flap on the front of the vehicle. This integrated charger is compatible with roadside battery charging facilities as well as standard household power supply 220Ã, V 10 A. Charging a blank battery takes about three and a half hours.

The Renault battery plant planned near Paris was postponed due to technical constraints. Construction will begin in the second quarter of 2012 and battery production is expected to begin in 2014 or 2015. Meanwhile Renault intends to purchase batteries for its EV range from a joint venture between Nissan Motor and NEC as well as LG Chem of South Korea.

Twizy is only provided with the LG Chem module. Batteries are assembled at Renault's Valladolid plant.

Sales

Since its market launch in March 2012, global sales reached 9,020 units by the end of 2012, of which 9,015 units were sold in Europe, making Twizy the best-selling plug-in electric vehicle in the European market that year. In France, a total of 1,551 units are registered through June 2012, including 1,212 Twizy 80s and 339 Twizy 45s, representing an 89% market share in the heavy quadricycle segment, and 28.5% market share among all categories of electric vehicles sold in France during the first half in 2012, surpassed Bollore Bluecar, the all-road best-selling electric car on the market during this time period.

Global sales fell 66.4% in 2013 from 2012, with 3,025 units shipped. Cumulative sales reached 14,160 units by October 2014. In October 2014, the best-selling market was Germany with 3,728 units and France with 3,276 units, followed by Italy with 2,265 units, Spain with 1,292, and Benelux with 1,137 units shipped since 2011. Milestones of the 15,000 Twizys sold worldwide achieved in April 2015.

Renault introduced Twizy to Ecuador, along with Renault Kangoo, expecting to import at least 150 to 200 units between the two models. The automaker works closely with shopping malls in CumbayÃÆ'¡ (Quito suburb) and Ecuador's Production Ministry to withdraw for two examples in an introductory campaign. The winners received their car on February 17th. All subsequent units are scheduled to arrive domestically from June, 2016, and will be sold from USD14,990. Sales in Latin America amounted to 305 units by May 2016, with Colombia as a regional market leader with 252 units, followed by Brazil with 34 units. Renault Twizy 40 is certified by Transport Canada in March 2016, and is scheduled to be released in the Canadian market in mid-2016.

In May 2016, Twizy's sales were led by Germany with 4,404 units, followed by France with 4,048, Italy with 2,696, Spain with 1,551, Benelux with 1,355, and Switzerland with 1,141. Global cumulative sales reached 19,342 units by December 2016. Of these, 18,592 have been sold in Europe, representing 96.1% of global sales.

Carsharing Program

Renault tested a carharing program called Twizy Way in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France, beginning in late June 2012. During the pilot phase the program operated with a fleet of 50 Renault Twizys distributed over a pilot area covering approximately 27 km 2 (10Ã, sqÃ, mi), and about 200 were allowed to register for testing. Twizy Way opens service to the general public in December 2012.

Chinese copy

In September 2014 the Chinese company Zhejiang Litong New Energy Automobile Corporation launched Rayttle E28. The E28 closely resembles Twizy in its outward appearance, size and performance that it claims to be.

Popular culture

In the music video of David Guetta's song "Rest of my Life", Twizy is shown in one scene where he is seen in a tunnel, and it also appears in David Guetta's video for the song "Play Hard".

Some Twizys are featured in the Guetta music video of the song "The Alphabeat".

In it Guetta himself and the main character of the video push Twizys. The cars were then filled by electricity generated by dancing and jumping from people attending Guetta shows.

Some Twizys are also featured as futuristic vehicles in the movie by Terry Gilliam called: "The Zero Theorem".

A Twizy appeared in the British drama Casualty, as a personal vehicle nurse Robyn Miller.
