History and overview
Spring Hill first appeared on the Hernando County map in early 1856 along what is now the Fort Dade Avenue north of the Wiscon community. The modern Spring Hill was founded in 1967 as a planned community, developed by Deltona Corporation and Mackle Brothers. The developers originally wanted to call the Spring Lake community and use it as a work name through the development process. They were forced to use a different name because the Spring Lake name was already used locally and chose Spring Hill. The plans for the community are identical to the Deltona community. The Mackle Brothers sells many properties and land in the area through intense advertising. It has since become a vast semi-city in its own right, though it is an unrelated area. The main entrance to the original building is marked by the Spring Hill waterfall on Spring Hill Drive and US Route 19 (Commercial Street).
Spring Hill is close to Tampa, 40 miles (64 km) to the south, and the completion of Suncoast Parkway in 2001 has made the community accessible to Tampa-St. Petersburg area.
