Dakich attended Andrean High School in Merrillville, Indiana. He chose to play basketball for Indiana under coach Bob Knight from 1981 to 1985. He was the team captain during the junior and senior seasons and Hoosiers finished with a record 84-39 (.683) during his career. As a player, he helped Indiana win a Big Ten title (during the 1982-83 season), earned three NCAA Tournament places and ended as second champion of his senior NIT season. As a junior, he was named All-Tournament in Indiana Classic and as a senior he earned a similar award at Hoosier Classic.
Dakich is remembered for his defensive efforts against Michael Jordan in the sadness of Indiana with No. 1. 1 North Carolina in the Eastern Regional Semifinals at the 1984 NCAA Tournament. It was Dakich's sixth start this year, but Knight commissioned him to keep Jordan on the afternoon of the game. Knight told him, "Do not let him fool you, it will embarrass you and me both." Dakich commented, "I went back to my room and threw up." Dakich held Jordan to 13 points in an Indiana 72-68 victory, with both players finally succumbing to being the last game in Jordan. As head coach, Dakich is highly remembered for being tied to two programs with reported NCAA offenses - West Virginia University and Indiana University - and spewing the end for the promising 2007-2008 Indiana Mens Soccer season with a first-round exit at both the Big Ten Tournament and Tournament NCAA basketball.

Train a career
Coach assistant
Dakich first became an assistant graduate trainer in Indiana under Bob Knight from 1985-87 and then an assistant coach in Indiana from 1987 to 1997. He helped the Indiana program win 74% (283-101) of his games over the 12 years he served as assistant coach. Hoosiers won the national title in the 1986-87 season and earned a place in the NCAA Tournament in every 12 seasons on staff. IU also captured four Big Ten titles while finishing third or better in 9 of the 12 years.
Dakich is an academic monitor on Indiana's basketball staff the last seven years and, under his guidance, every four-year player on the program passes. He also helped in the development of six All-American players and three Best National Player candidates, including Player of the Year, Calbert Cheaney.
Head coach
From 1997 to 2007 he served as head coach at Bowling Green State University where he compiled a record of 156-140 (.527). He coached many players who signed professional contracts, including former Indiana Pacers guard Keith McLeod. In addition, he has two players who earned MAC Player of the Year and three league leads in scoring during his tenure. During the reign of Dakich, BGSU appeared on NIT twice but never reached the NCAA Tournament. Dakich has lost the season in four of the last five years with BGSU, and resigned as head coach in 2007.
Briefly in 2002, Dakich was appointed basketball head coach at West Virginia University (WVU) to replace Gale Catlett. During a conversation with WVU players, Dakich learned that people affiliated with the basketball program may have been guilty of breaking the NCAA recruitment rules. He allegedly tried to renegotiate the higher salaries in WVU and failed, thus returning to Bowling Green as head coach of basketball after just a week at WVU. WVU voluntarily reported the results of its internal investigations to the NCAA, and the university was not subject to sanctions as a result of the violations. The focus of the investigation, Jonathan Hargett, was banned from WVU athletics for his role in reported violations.
At the end of the 2008 season he served as a temporary head coach at Indiana University, following the resignation of Kelvin Sampson for violations of the NCAA recruit. Under Dakich's guidance, Hoosiers went 0-2 in postseason play, losing in the first round of the Big 10 tournaments and the NCAA. After the season, IU refused to offer Dakich the job permanently, instead choosing Tom Crean.
Careers on television and radio
Dakich is the host of "The Dan Dakich Show" on the Indianapolis radio station WFNI, ESPN radio affiliate, 1070 The Fan. Dakich served as college basketball studio analyst for the Big Ten Network for college basketball season 2009-2010. Starting in November 2010, Dakich joined ESPN as a college basketball color commentator and studio analyst, replacing Steve Lavin.
