Outplacement is a support service provided by responsible organizations, who want to support individuals who are out of business (voluntarily or unintentionally) - to help transition former employees to new jobs and help them reorient themselves in job market. A consulting firm usually provides outplacement services paid by former employers and is usually achieved through practical advice, training materials and workshops. Some companies may offer psychological support.
Outplacement is either delivered through individual one-on-one sessions or in group formats. Topics include career guidance, career evaluation, job search skills, job market targeting, resume writing, interview preparation, networking, and negotiation.
Consultants support individuals who are looking for new jobs, as well as those who want to start a new business, retire, or arrange a portfolio of activities. The program has a time limit, ranging from a few months to a longer period, such as 12 months and is offered at all levels of the organization, from workers to company employees.
Outplacement provides former employees with structure and guide to their new career choices, and keeps the morale of those who remain in the Company who see that colleagues are given the necessary support when they leave the company.

Histori
The term outplacement was created over 30 years ago by James E. Challenger, founder of Challenger, Gray & amp; Christmas, a career consultancy based in Chicago. Challenger created the concept of outplacement and the initial program to implement it.
With increasing levels of downsizing, charging, redundancy and layoffs, especially during the 1980s and 1990s, businesses increasingly found the need for some form of relief in reducing the trauma of redundancy for both departing employees and those who remained. Indeed, research shows that job loss is one of the most stressful experiences a person can face besides death and divorce.

Criticism
The Wall Street Journal was reported in 2009 that US companies are not satisfied with the quality of outplacement services they receive:
As demand increases in a $ 4 billion outplacement business per year, providers are increasingly offering standard services, which some workers say offer little value. Businesses eager to get rid of former employees quickly and cheaply impose time limits that hamper effectiveness. Few companies track whether the work is outplacement.
The best outplacement program provides ongoing support, as is often the case that after individuals have not been able to find a new job after searching for several weeks that they need the most help. Many companies will stop providing support after a given time even though some companies provide support as long as the person needs it. Some also track the success rate of rework to help evaluate their services.
In popular culture
In the 2009 film Up in the Air George Clooney plays the lead role of Ryan Bingham, an unpleasant man who travels the world to fire employees on behalf of employers who do not want to do it themselves. Many people are unfortunately confused with the role of outplacement consultants, who focus far more on providing benefits to employees than the characters in the film.
