In golf, the difference between amateur and professional is closely guarded. An amateur who violates the amateur status rules may lose his amateur status. Golfers who lose their amateur status may not play in an amateur competition until amateur status is restored; a professional can not play in an amateur tournament unless the Committee is notified, acknowledges and affirms its participation. It is very difficult for a professional to regain his amateur status; simply agreeing not to receive payments for certain tournaments is not enough. A player must apply to a sports body that arranges for amateur status to be restored.

Historically, the difference between amateur and professional golfers is closely related to social class. In England of the 18th and 19th centuries, golf was played by the rich, for pleasure. In the United States, the PGA of America has 31 different member classifications for professionals. Many of the classifications also have an apprenticeship position accordingly.
