History

Dr. Alfred Elwyn went to Boston to attend the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1849. He had promised to take a letter from Rachel Laird, a blind girl living in Philadelphia, to Laura Bridgman (December 21, 1829-May). 24, 1889), the famous blind deaf blind in Boston. Bridgman is studying at the South Boston Institute for the Blind, and while there Elwyn visits the classroom for mentally ill children run by Dr. James B. Richards.

Elwyn was impressed with Richards' work, and decided to do something similar in Pennsylvania. In 1852, with Richards, Elwyn founded a training school for mentally retarded children in Germantown, Pennsylvania. In 1853, the State Legislature of Pennsylvania formally chartered "Pennsylvania Training School for Mind-Mind Children" with Richards as the first supervisor in Germantown. The school soon outperformed the Germantown facility, and in 1857 a 60-hectare (240,000 m 2 ) farm was purchased in Media, Pennsylvania to build a new facility with help from the Pennsylvania legislature. The building was completed in 1859 and Elwyn, Richards, and 25 students moved on September 1, 1859. The school was officially dedicated 2 November 1859.

In 1870, Dr. Elwyn became President of Elwyn School. West Chester and Philadelphia Railroad have nearby stops called "Greenwood" stops, but locals call it "Elwyn Station". The closest community is also known as "Elwyn".
