BMW Assist is a telematics assistance service offered by BMW. BMW Assist is similar to the OnStar service or Mercedes-Benz mbrace from GM as both use cellular networks and telemetry Global Positioning to locate or guide vehicles. BMW Assist can provide turn-by-turn directions, remote unlocking, vehicle diagnostics, airbag usage notices, theft recovery and towing or repair of a flat tire. This service includes free in most of the new BMW. After expiration, it can be purchased at an annual rate. In March 2016, BMW's assistance was undergoing "technological improvements" in the US, and updates were not processed for MY2013 and older models. BMW does not provide an estimated time of completion. Those whose membership has expired no longer have the advantage of the Safety or Comfort plan. Members who have active service on December 31, 2016 will have the option of receiving a $ 200 compensation for loss of service or to receive retrofit hardware to continue the service. There is a population that BMW does not allow updates between March and December 2016, thus forcing them out of safety and security features.

Technology
BMW Assist is integrated into car communication and audio systems. It works in conjunction with the navigation system (if equipped) or using its own GPS equipment. The original BMW Assist system works in conjunction with the AMPS mobile network for data transmission and voice communications. The BMW Help System is currently working on GSM technology.
Cars communicate over a cellular network with a Back-end system that receives and analyzes information. Both voice and data (via SMS or GPRS) are transmitted. Depending on the application, the information is routed for example to the call center or presented on the website.

Damage recovery
Recovery theft is an additional subscription service offered by BMW Assist. This service is able to track the location of the car through car computers and GPS systems.
Most BMW owners are concerned about theft using third-party tracking options. This device has many advantages, and disadvantages. Most devices are small, and can be placed almost anywhere in the vehicle. Some higher end devices also contain small resources. This device takes longer for thieves to be detected, and may be more difficult to disable. But the BMW system is tied into the car's computer system and can not be released without making the vehicle move. In addition, BMW systems use car power reserves to amplify cellular signals up to three Watt according to BMW literature. Signal advantages are further attributed to the use of large antennas of vehicles that are several times larger than mobile antennas.
The BMW Assist system has an excellent track record if theft is found in no time.
