Histori

The first wave of European settlers arrived at the Cross Timbers country that rolled in northern central Texas in the 1840s. Primarily of Scottish-Irish origin, the pioneering peasants came for most of the southern states, following the border as it shifted west of the Mississippi. They enter the area where Native Americans have lived for thousands of years. Comanche posed a serious threat to the settlers, and in 1849, the US Army established Fort Worth to protect farms along its sparsely populated border.

The southeastern region of the fort (and the Trinity River) was well protected and presumably quite well settled in the early 1850s. In one well-documented case, eight related families migrated to the area in 1853 from Illinois. Three of the four Gibson brothers in this group established a homestead about 4 miles (6 km) northwest of today's Mansfield. These settlements, later known as the Gibson Community, included schools and church buildings in 1860.

When R.S. Man and Julian Feild arrived around 1856 and built a grinding mill at the intersection of Mansfield's center, the beginning of the community may be in the oak grove adjacent to Walnut Creek (originally called Cedar Bluff Creek). The Walnut Creek Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church had organized itself in 1854. Members met in their homes, so there were allegedly a group of houses in the area.

In 1856, Julian Feild purchased 540 hectares (2.2 km 2 ) in the Mansfield area. Humans and Feild completed a three-story brick mill between 1856 and 1859. The factory, which produces flour and flour, was the first to be built in North Texas to harness steam power and enjoy patronage as far south as San Antonio and as far north as Oklahoma. The plant's location in Southeast Tarrant County may reflect the advanced country of wheat cultivation in the area and the availability of ready wood to feed the plant's boiler.

Feild opened a general merchandise store at the same time as the factory, located on Broad Street. He built a wooden house for his family, which also serves as a guesthouse for travelers and customers. In 1860, the future city nuclear existed. The first post office was established that year, with Julian Feild as a postmaster.

During the American Civil War, Man and Feild Mill provided food and flour for the State Confederate Army, transporting it to Shreveport, Louisiana, and Jefferson City, Missouri. As is common practice, the owner tithed ten percent of the factory's production to the Confederation. The small community around the factory was unique in Tarrant County because it prospered during the Civil War. The "Feild Carrier", assembled on an ox-drawn carriage wagon, went as far as Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where parts of the Indian War raged on the southern plains in the late 1860s and 1870s.

The prosperous community that grows around the Man and Feild factory takes the name "Mansfeild", a combination of the names of the founders. Repeated spelling errors over the years result in conventional spelling acceptance of "Mansfield." The city, founded in 1909, continues to be a center for surrounding farmland.

In 1956, the federal court ordered the Mansfield Independent School District to secede; the first such sequence in Texas. Protests by 300 white men in front of Mansfield High School, to prevent three black students from registering, touched one of the longest running desegregation battles of the Civil Rights Movement. The Mansfield School was secretly relegated in 1965 for dealing with a lack of federal funds.
