History
It all started in 1988 when Craig Strickland, a pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church, felt the call to plant a "church in the east" in the suburbs of Memphis - little did he know God's plan for a small place called Hope! Together with 25 other charter members, Craig started Hope in the living room of a Germantown house in September 1988. Nine months after Hope's conception, Eli Morris came to Hope with a strong spirit and a big heart for missions within the city. Still to this day, the Hope Urban Ministry is expanding in the communities of North Memphis with many opportunities to offer a better life for the families we work for. From Germantown's living room, Hope moved into a rented room at Shelby Place Restaurant (currently The Butcher Shop), then to the Evangelical Christian School gymnasium where they spent the next seven years. In 1992, Hope bought their first land, 22 acres, at 8500 Walnut Grove Road in Cordova. They moved into their first permanent worship room in 1996, which is now home to Hope's Ministry of Students. Since that day, Hope's continued growth over the next 10 years makes it one of the 100 largest churches in America, with an average weekend service of 7,000 people attending. It also makes way for the expansion of several buildings to accommodate our children, recreation and ministry kitchens, and a recording studio, just to name a few. Now providing more than 30 different ministries, serving thousands of people from Memphis to the Bronx to Belize, the Hope Church has grown beyond the wildest dreams of a few beginners over 25 years ago. The prayers of Craig and Eli were fulfilled when Rev. Rufus Smith agreed to leave his hometown of Houston, Texas, to join the faculty team in 2010. Over the next three years, Craig, Eli, and Rufus worked through position transitions. They think that the Hope congregation will represent the culture of Moses, just as the leadership now imitates them. Hope is celebrated 25 years in September 2013, and in November, Rufus was elected to take the position of the Senior Pastor. Craig moved into the Founder Priest role, where he still maintains an active and tangible position in our leadership. Nothing fills in the Senior Assistant's Assistant's shoes is better than Eli, and this is really where God keeps calling to serve.
