Histori

With a size of nearly 36 square miles, Woodbury is a direct descendant of one of the congress cities that the Minnesota Territory is divided into when the territory was handed over by Native Americans and "opened to settlements." Woodbury was originally called Red Rock, but renamed Woodbury after Levi Woodbury, the first justice of the United States Supreme Court to attend law school, realized that another Red Rock was in Minnesota. When it first settled in 1844, the land was mostly wood but converted to agricultural land. The municipal government was held in 1858. One of the few surviving ranches in the 19th century, Charles Spangenberg Farmstead, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The construction of the first suburban housing began in 1955, and the city has seen an increase in metropolitan expansion because agricultural land has given way to development and shopping centers.
